typicialy you never want to cut more that 1/3 off the hight of grasses.
however we live in the REAL world. as the season progresses we always increase the hight by 1/4 of an inch untill we reach 4"
hope this helps

I'm cutting everything from 2" to 2.5"
It's spring and the lawns are growing fast. Cutting short is the best way to stay ahead of the lawns and keep them looking neat between mowings.
A short cut lawn grows slower but can dry out faster without enough water.
Some lawns I would cut shorter but they just aren't smooth enough.
That's my 2 cents.
Oh, I run a commercial LCO in Maine. We have a few accounts.

This can get confusing, if you want to skip the BS and use a one size fits all then cut at 3" always and you're done until you wish to become more turfactically advanced but 3" is a good all-around setting for most any mower.
As for myself I'm with the general consensus of raising the height as it gets hotter, everyone does this a little different because of personal and professional reasons but deck size affects this as well, raising the height as the temps rise does help maintain the turf, yes...
My 48" I start at 3" but it's been at 3.25" for the past 2-3 weeks and tomorrow when I do maintenance it will go to 3.5" where it will stay until late September when I start to bring it back down.
So then I have a 60" and that's a long story but I set it slightly higher than the 48", the thing is the wider the deck the higher it needs to be or it will cut too close to the dirt due to uneven terrains... I'd say for a 60" the minimum cut height should be 3.25"
Anyhow, hope that helps and remember if you get confused just go 3"
btw turfactically is not a real word i made that up lol

I thought cutting height depended in part on the type of grass - say, higher for fescues and lower for some others. How can a "one-height-fits-all" be a good policy?
I'm a homeowner, not an LCO - cutting with my new Quick 44. It comes from BOP set at 2.5 in. I'll up it to at least 3 soon - cutting fescue (I think) in a really shady yard.
