Briggs Float type carb only rins when primed

I was given this mower and it was in bad shape. The flywheel key had been sheared and the carb was dirty. But the deck was nice and i needed a mower. I put a new key in and cleaned the carb out with cleaner and air. The Bowl gasket is ripped but i didnt have a chance to get a new one yet. I put it back together anyway. I prime it and it runs then dies. Would the ripped bowl gasket cause this? Or is it more likely to be a clogged jet?

Engine Model & Type #'s would allow us to know WHICH Briggs you have and WHAT carb.
That said, look at the nut holding the float bowl on and clean out the holes with a fine wire.

If this is a small (20-21") mower, and it has been sitting around a while, take the numbers off the engine and just replace the carb. ($25-$40.)

i cleaned the screw that holds the bowl in place and now it works great!!
