make sure you have enough insurance to cover it. may be worth subbing it out to a tree company

Mowing insurance will not cover an accident from cutting trees down. I have done some in the past but I was very careful. I rented a lift and cut piece by piece from top on down because it was over top of a house. I didn't feel good about doing because there is always lots of danger but it was for friends and a real tree guy would have charged them over $1000. I made $250 and didn't have to clean the mess up. Be careful not only of property but there are extra risk for yourself as well. One mistake can alter your life if not take it.

Make certain that you policy covers tree work - most don't. Mine specifically says "No Tree Work". And they mean it.

Also, a 40' tree is a big tree for a cutoff point.

Geez, if its not leaning over the house cut it. You could do more damage throwing a rock from a mower through a ?15,000 window. A 40ft tree is not very big. Figure this way.

$250 for chipper or hauling
$400 for time
$100 for fuel and supplies = $750.00

You need to find out if they cover tree work, most gen.liab. policies specifically do not,
and there are many reasons but as a rule tree insurance will run you another g a year.

Read your policy carefully a lot of landscape contracts don't cover tree work due to power lines etc.. I called when I was offered a job to remove 12 sycamore trees and my agent said no way the clause was buried way deep in the fine print, they did cover me when I punched a hole in a 1" hi pressure gas main though :D

say punt66 how do you like those giant vacs? I used one once and it was awesome it could suck up concrete are they dependable. Also cutting a tree down and hauling it off is a hell of a lot of work and time a lot of guys i know wounded even touch a job with a 40' tree because of all the hassle.

I charge about $200 for every 10 feet tall that the tree is. Small branches get mulched and sold, large ones are sold as firewood. In my area, I cut down trees like I eat lunch; damn near every day!

Wow some of you guys are the same people that fuss about low ballers. Tree people call landscapers that do tree work without the correct GL or WC insurance trunk slammers. You guys dont want people to take from you by bidding to low. Why do the same to a guy that has a 50 to 100 thousand dollar set up to do the work? Build a relationship with an arborist and make 10% with no labor or overhead. KevinACrider I have a forty foot live oak that needs to come down that is 55" DBH. You will need a crane on this job will you do it for $800.00? Live Oak weighs around 80 pounds per square foot. I have $5500 on this tree so if a LCO sent it my way he would clear $550 for a simple phone call and 20 minutes on site showing me the job.

So let me get this straight...you have a tree that YOU haven't even seen, - and you're asking US for an idea of what to charge? ;)

The Vac is incredible. I have it on a swing out behind a dump insert. You guys sound like your affraid of trees. If you are then defenetly do not cut. If it isnt over the house i could have that tree cut, chipped and loaded up in under 2 hours, and yes im solo. I did a job of 13 trees in 2 days.

Definitely not for everyone! I grew up on a farm and got the bulk of my experience cutting in our woodlots for 20+yrs, moved up to cutting in open areas of a facility I did outdoor maintenance for for 6 years. Made many mistakes along the way and learned that this isn't a game. BTW I also have a B.S. in Forestry and have a good understanding of the dynamics involved in felling trees. That all being said (not to toot my horn by any means) there are many trees I turn down and don't think twice about touching. Those I take - I take my good sweet time with. Nothing is going to screw you up for life faster than rushing into and through a tree job.
Those reading this thread that have little-to-no experience in cutting should seriously consider starting on VERY easy and small jobs and/or subbing out something over 25'.
And like others have said...make sure your insurance covers your butt BEFORE you give any estimates or bids. Oh, and look at the tree before you come on here expecting some advice please.

About $5 per inch x (0.5x the hight of the sun in degrees / the temperature in Fahrenheit.)

Send a tree service by to give you an estimate. Add a little for yourself and have them do it.
