View Full Version : Minimum Horsepower

Hey guys,

I'm starting to look at getting a walk behind and was wondering about horsepower. I'm looking at Toro and Ferris 32-36 inch. Seems like most of them have 13-15hp Kawasaki engines. Is that going to be a good choice?

I've got an older (2001) Exmark Metro 36", with a 2004 Kohler Command Pro 15hp engine. The engine seems to be doing fine, I've mulched all year with it, even in the heavy spring growth. As for the belt drive, I'm not overly impressed with that. Maybe its an adjustment thing, but the belts slip pretty easily when using a sulky. Going up hills, I have to step off and walk behind. Sorry, got off subject...The 15hp should be fine for a 32 or 36", in my opinion.

i have a 33" walk behind from the older days, dont really know the brand, but it had a 10.5 hp engine on it, and after a while it seemed to die out and the blade would not stay engaged. after that happened (had had the mower for like 12 years...) i swapped the engine out for a 14.5 hp one and it is working GREAT!.

that is just about where you want your engine size to be, it can turn the blade with no problem, and move the mower too

Yes, for those size decks (32-36) either of those engines are fine.

Thanks for the tip on the belt drive. I'll try and stay away from those.

Just get as much HP as you can...nobody ever complains about too much power! My 40" has a 17hp Kawi and its plenty for me.
