Ok, so I have my heart set on a 52" grasshopper. Of course the 223 would be the better choice, but I kinda still want a frontmount. Is the 723 enough for the 52" deck, with the grass catcher system? Or should I move up to a 727? The thing I am worried about, is the 723 may be underpowered, and I'd be stuck with it for like 5 years.

I have spent quite a bit of time on a 227/61, and it is border-line underpowered, which kinda makes me think the 27/52 would be a good match.

23hp should be plenty on a 52" Deck, keep in mind that the hydro pumps are different sizes between those two machines also.

That is kinda what I was thinking, the smaller pumps will use less power.

Any other ideas? Does ANYONE on here run grasshoppers lol?

The 27Hp might be better if you run the collector system all the time. If you only use the collector part of the time, I would probably go for the less expensive 23HP machine.
I have run the 23HP and the 27HP machines side by side for several years. I never see any real power difference unless I am in really overgrown grass. However, I do not use a collector system.
I think that 90% of the time you would be happy with the 23HP machine. That 23Hp Kohler is a real workhorse.

Ok, thanks. How would I get a demo in here from the factory to use for a day or so? I KNOW my local dealer won't do anything to set up a demo...tried that before.

Ask your local dealer to call his Grasshopper factory rep. most of the factory reps have some models they keep on hand to do demos with. Of course, he may not have the exact model you want to see.
If that does not work, I would take a day and run over to the Grasshopper factory. Someone there can help you and can probably get you a factory tour if they are not too covered up or short handed.

Yea, the factory is only like 45 mins. from here. I guess tomorrow I will call up some of the other local dealers and see about getting a demo set up.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with Jeff on this one. I have a 223/52 [bought it from him] and I will say it is under powered about 50% of the time for my use. I would go for the 27. I just bought a new machine and got a 31hp and love it. My Walker has a 20hp and now a year later I'm wishing I would have gone with more hp. I think from now on I will be going for the overkill on the hp so I do not regret it later.

Well thats how that 227/61 is (underpowered about half the time). I am wondering though, if they arent ALL underpowered till you get to 30 or so, because as the HP gets bigger, so do the pumps...which I would assume use about as much power as the deck.

I am gonna call tomorrow to try and set up a demo on a 23/52 with a catcher, either a frontmount or a midmount, to see how it does.

I've got a 22hp engine on a 52" deck and run a collection system off of the deck. It has enough power were it won't bog down in taller grass but going up hills while collecting, it could use a little more power.

Have you thought about the 721DT2? If I wasn't a power-wh0re I would be all over that machine with a 52" deck and collector.

The new T Drive system is in-line direct, which reduces any drag from pulleys and belts. This leaves more HP for the Deck. This is available on 600 series, 723, 727 & 729 liquid cooled kubota

i have a 52 deck, and i opted for the 29 kubota l/c three cyl motor.
it runs easier
it runs cooler
does okay on gas
exected to outlast the mower

the 300 series is bigger hydro pumps so its stronger

like you say, your stuck with it for a while so i thought get the best. good luck, david
