my customes would never wait till aug for work to be done. we are always 1-2weeks out. any longer, we lose the work to someone who can come immediately

Usually about two to three weeks. We do mostly mowing and fert and are landscaping jobs we do on Thursdays and Fridays. This includes trimmings prunnings and the such.

One month out on the landscape crew... the longer you are in the business the easy it is to book out.

November, and if I close on a potential $15K project that looks good right now, December.

Its good to see some are hanging in there even with the state of the economy (to be fair, some areas are better off than others) and the cost of fuel.

If I were booked out until August, I'd be doing some hiring...

I have to agree, if your services are in that much demand (booked til August) then you have to hire more people to take advantage of it.

I dont do the hardscaping/ big projects yet, mostly maint., but I'm very busy with plenty of work- My question is do you just hire more help to get you by, or do you hire GOOD help that can work alone and do a job that is up to your standards- then, if things slow down, or the seasons change, do you keep this help around or lay them off?
I ask this as a serious question. Having been in business only 3 yrs. I have this dilemma. I have hired more help, but I still dont feel comfortable to let them work alone (other than mowing) on projects- I still feel as if I need to be on every jobsite/ project and babysit. I'm sure I could get some more experienced help if I could afford to pay more, but then I question what to do when things slow down between mowing and plowing seasons. (I can certainly afford to pay more now, but if things dry up or slow down a little, I would be pinched)
Matt.
