I have a toro 21" mower with the Kawasaki engine. When I change the oil, I make a huge mess. My question is twofold: What is the easier way to loosen the plastic drain plug, and how do you avoid dumping oil everywhere once the drain plug comes out? Is there some sort of funnel that works well for this? I make a big mess every time I change the oil.

On most 21" mowers, I just tip the whole mower upside down and pour the oil out the dipstick hole.

Here are the instructions from the Toro Owners manual.

2. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
3. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug (Figure 13).
4. Place a suitable drain pan under the right side of the
lawn mower.
5. Remove the dipstick by rotating the cap
counterclockwise and pulling it out.
6. Raise the left side of the lawn mower to drain the oil
into the drain pan.

Install a hose with a quick drain valve while you are at it. It will save you time and aggravation next time you have to change your oil.
The Kawa engine has a drain hole on both sides. Check the other side, you may have a quick drain already installed...

Get an oil evacuator - $40.00 and will hold about 2 gallons.
