Here are some jobs pictures. The foundation was way over engineered. It was about 11'8'' in the ground including reveal. Alot of material to move. It was about 4500 square feet.

Here is some others of a 16K square foot home. I have been working here for almost two years. The pictures of the hole are the tunnel which will connect the big house to the gymnasium on the left side of the picture of the house. The unbricked building is a pool house, although the pool is outdoor. We dig the pool next week.

KSSS,

Great pics! I forgot that you have some new pieces of equipment. Is that loader yours too? I forgot, how many people are working for you? Your 9020 looks like it's still in good shape, what are the hours?

The loader was rented. I would like to have one but for now I will continue to rent. The 9020 has 8300 hours on it. It runs good for an old war horse. I currently have two guys working for me.

Where's all the black dirt and MUD

If you dug that deep here you would have to be pumping the water out faster then you was digging.Plus you would'nt be setting that close to the hole digging.

You would have to have that gravely dirt to backfill to run on top of the mud at the bottom that your carring down into the hole with the skid to get around.

Amazing how the dirt/mud/rock is, in different areas.Again i see why you insist on using a wheel skid in your area!

You have instant gravel on your jobs,if you would screed that stuff you would have a pile of pea gravel and not enough dirt to back fill with looks like.

What was you saving the rocks on the bank for ? to throw at the help or the inspector?Or was it for the better half

The late set of pictures of that job ,looked to be a real challenge with the footings sticking out at the base, having to locate, and
digging around then. That eats up time that you could be hogging dirt, but comes with the territory.

As usual a great job and thanks for sharing.Good luck:usflag:

this is probably a stupid question but what is a 9020? is it the trackhoe or the front loader?

When I moved out here I quickly had to relearn what topsoil was. Coming from ND where topsoil is black and fertile, atleast here in ID it anything that is relatively rock free. It has to rain a lot to shut us down, which it seldom does here.

Yea the tunnel was real tough to dig. I had to dig most of it perpendicular to the dig line which always sucks and sucks worse when it is so deep and wide. The machine had to folded up to miss either the house or the gym to dump 180 behind the machine. It took a while.

You can see why there are not a lot of track machines here, there are some but not as many as in other areas. The ones that are here take a beating if they use them for excavation. The landscape only guys do fair better.

You want a basement that deep and that size you would need a drill rig, 3 boxes of dynamite a excavator and 12 grand later you have a basement hole dug.

bobcat_ron

Now that I have seen what type of "soil" conditions you run in, buying any CTL would be a PITA, even I cringe if I am that type of gravel for more than a day, ain't nothing worse than having a "pebble" drop out of the bucket just as you are hauling ass down the road and having a track hit it.

coopers
07-04-2008, 08:28 PM
There really that many problems with tracks and gravel?

bobcat_ron
07-04-2008, 08:33 PM
Only if you get a good "pebble" under the track at high speeds, that can break a steel imbed or crack the rubber, get a "pebble" inside the tracks and it can chew up the rubber that the Deere rollers/idlers ride on, any time that rubber gets chipped and exposes the steel, that's a problem and can deteriorate tracks faster, I guess ASV still has the upper hand.

Let's see what happens in August when the new DRB tracks from Bair products some out for all ASV/Cat MTL's.

Sure did. All 36 inches of it. I have been looking for a 42" but have not found one yet. The good thing is the smaller bucket cuts through the rock easier.

A 48" would be pushing it, that "topsoil" is exactly like the pit run gravel that 70% of my little cow town is sitting on, and even with extra long teeth it would be a chore for that machine, you can get a 42" with an extra big "butt" on it to increase capacity.

what is with caterpillar mini excavator buckets they have really skinny teeth that have one big groove cut in the top of them........ they look pretty funny compared to other buckets that have the regular teeth like workbrow (i dont know how to spell it)

jlm....around here we use all sorts of teeth on our buckets. For frost - tiger teeth. For smooth grading - a straight edge welded on to worn out old teeth. For digging , it depends on what, but usually hensley style square ended teeth that eventually end up rounded and blunt. There are different attachment styles for different brands too. All my bucket teeth are pin mounted from the side.

I understand there are all different types of teeth but idk..... they are just totally different than any tooth i have ever seen..... but just forget it....

Kaiser, I found a 42" bucket for that machine...it comes complete with a Cat 315DL. You'll have to make a few sacrifices but it'll be worth it.

But seriously, you check out that CX160 link I sent you? Pretty clean machine for what they're asking.

What is the difference in heaped value from a 36" to a 42"? These are 1/2 yard machines. What is the cost of a 42" bucket? If you take the cost value of a new bucket vs. existing 36" bucket, loss of swing time, +/- same load value of 36" and 42".......I really don't see the value in getting a 42" bucket for digging in those conditions.......you would have to spend alot of man hours to justify the purchase of a 42"......

A brandnew 42 inch bucket your probably looking at minimum 5 grand. The price of steel has skyrocketed the cost of everything up.

The cheapest option is find a good used bucket and change the lugging to fit the machine.

For KSSS digging conditions a clean up bucket with teeth would dig that

Richie Bros auctions is a good place to find used and near new buckets.

You can spend 5K on a 42", I have found some cheaper. The issue is if I get a bucket, I want a coupler, if I get a coupler, I want a thumb (not fixed but hyd.). If I flip this machine for a newer one I don't need to do any of it. There in lies the rub.

I found many buckets at RB auctions. I just have not made it to one this year yet. That is the place to buy them. I usually have to put new ears on for my machines but it still works out to be cost effective.

There will be some deals on excavators coming up I imagine the Case dealer can sell you a new 160 for a reasonable cost.

Most of the used equipment out on the market is bashed to h*ll and worn out.

I must've missed the right side picture, that one service door is mangled. But the operator side looks okay for sheet metal. I dunno, $54K is fairly inexpensive for a 3,2XX hour machine.

I sent the guy an email for more info. I want the long stick version and it appears that this is the short stick. Your right though the money is right and I'll bet he would go even lower. The machine needs to be repainted and the right graphics put on it. Not to mention replace some sheet metal.

I have run long and short stick versions, I prefer short for breakout. With a 160, even with the short stick, you have quite a bit of reach in a fairly compact package when compared to a 200. I'd say if you can get it for $48K, go for it. Spend some $$$ getting the sheet metal redone and paint the machine. You can cover up the dent in the main body below the mangled service door by welding on a steel bumper, obviously you'd want to do it on both sides of the machine. After you fix that service door, she'd look awesome. You can send me a finder's fee check the following week after you take delievery.

The longer reach has been a life saver. The long stick version of the 160 about matches the 210. I need the longer reach more than the breakout. It makes a big difference on the over 2500 square foot basements. Less rehandling of material. I have tore out walls footing with my current long stick machine and really did not miss the short stick. The crowed force is less but the bucket breakout should be about the same. I'll have to check on that.

On the finders fee. How about I buy the beer when I come into town for a RB sale in Olympia?

Scag48
07-09-2008, 01:09 AM
You should be fine with that sandy material you're working in with a long stick anyway. Crowd force digs the hole, but for working concrete walls and demo, bucket breakout rules, which should remain close to the same with a long stick vs. short. You could probably find a long stick somewhere on a salvaged machine, problem is that you'd have to remount and re-plumb the thumb.

You're on for the beers, Sept. 16th and 17th in Olympia. There's one in a couple weeks up in Vancouver, BC. You could stop by GR's house and buy him a few beers, with the way diesel prices are, I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

It appears that you have developed a case of heat exhaustion or it may possibly be heat stroke. It could also be a case of lack of female contact, I suspect that BC Ron also suffers from this as well.
