What is the purpose of putting crushed limestone on the yard in the fall?

Finely ground limestone is used to raise the pH of the soil. Using high nitrogen fertilizers can lower the pH of the soil to more acid, so finely ground limestone is used to bring the pH to a more neutral or even a more alkaline level. I would always recommend a pH test to see if it's necessary. Most plants prefer a pH of neutral to slightly acid.

You might want to do a google with the type of grass you have and pH tolerance.
