They're finally getting around to an official bulletin on this issue? This was in my email today.

ESP Modular MV Error Bulletin

To: Rain Bird Contractor Customers

RE: "MV ERR" Message on Certain ESP Modular Controllers

Rain Bird strives to produce the highest quality irrigation products on the market. We continuously monitor our products during and after installation and have identified a condition in which "MV ERR" may incorrectly display on some ESP-4M and ESP-4Mi controllers manufactured before July 4, 2007.

When correctly displayed, the "MV ERR" message is part of the ESP Modular diagnostics function and identifies a short-circuit condition with the system's master valve. Earlier-model controllers utilized a soldered cable attachment between the front panel and the backplane (circuit board under the protective plastic cover that the modules plug into) which under certain circumstances may generate an incorrect message on the display.

Effective July 4, 2007, Rain Bird began production of an enhanced ESP-M with plug-in connectors for both the front panel and backplane. (The date code located on the actual enhanced backplane circuit board should be on or after June 26, 2007 ("26JN07") - please see instructions for additional details.) After extensive reliability testing and thousands of installations, no occurrences of the "MV ERR" issue have been seen with the modified design. ESP Modular controllers produced since July 4, 2007 are not affected by this bulletin.

If you have seen this condition on installations of the earlier model, we recommend that you keep a small supply of replacement backplane assemblies on hand to quickly address this issue should it arise. Kits may be obtained free of charge from your local distributor or through your Rain Bird field representative and include a backplane circuit board, ribbon cable and easy-to-follow instructions, which you can download now (2.5MB).

One other expedient alternative to replacement of the backplane is the installation of a jumper cable as also outlined in the attached directions. The jumper cable solution takes only one minute to install and will permanently resolve the "MV ERR" issue, but it should be noted that the short-circuit detection function of the ESP-Modular will then be disabled. Jumper cable kits are also available free of charge from Rain Bird.

We sincerely appreciate your business and apologize for any inconvenience you and your customers may have experienced. If you have any questions, please contact your Rain Bird field representative or call us at 1-800-RAINBIRD.

Got an email from a homeowner in Arizona today via my website wanting to know what the fix for this is.

He said the Rain Bird tech at their 800 number told him there was a simple fix, (the jumper I guess) but wouldn't tell him how to do it (probably because he also needs the parts).

He also said that the distributors in his area don't seem to be aware of the problem.

Not sure if he's a DIY, doesn't have a good relationship with his previous contractor, or the controller might have been installed before he moved in, but I went ahead and forwarded him the RB Technical Bulletin email.

I'm thinking he got my name from a thread in lawnsite.

Anyway, here are the instructions in that email, in case anyone needs them...

Follow-up from the homeowner who emailed me:

Gregg, For your info, the Rainbird Dist. in Buckeye, AZ did not have the kits so he just replaced the whole unit... one of the Rainbird Dist. didn't know anything about this problem.. and hadn't ever seen the bulletin... Thanks again for all the help.... Mark

Today David replaced 2 ESP-MOD clocks for me that had a "DELAY ERROR" on the display (maybe it said DLY ERROR, have to check in the AM).

Unfortunately he was a little too efficient and dumped each clock in the customer's trash can, so have no way of checking date code.

Anyone else seen this?

Seems like alot of work I wish that they would just swap the entire unit out as we get no labor credit for this.I have swapped dozens out with new Pro C s and problems gone IM done with that controller.

I see this is an old thread and I am a Rancher not a Landscaper, but I have one of these boards that have the manufacturing defect the part number is 635575 and the date code is 11AP07. My Rainbird controller randomly gives me the MV ERR. I cannot get the link to the PDF file posted in this thread to work. I am a DIY, I live to far away from anyone for them to justify the trip out. I can install the"Jumper" or I can buy a new board, if I could locate one or the instruction to install the jumper. I would prefer just replacing the board. Thanks to anyone willing to help out.

Do you have a relationship with any Rain Bird distributors? I know mine still has a couple of dozen of the panel kit on hand. The kits didn't cost distributors anything, so maybe one can send a kit to you for shipping costs...

It's not the clock panel, but the board attached to the back wall of the box that the modules plug into that is the problem. I had to replace another one 2 months ago. It didn't show the MV Err message, but one of the modules was live all the time. Replacing the back panel fixed it and RB reimbursed my labor to boot (clock was only 6 months old).

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my inquiry. I do have the location that I bought the unit from and I will contact them about this board. My second option would be to buy a board from another company. When I searched online for that part number I had zero hits. So I though maybe someone new a company that would carry these parts. I have never had any major issues with Rainbird, but I am disappointed with their web sites lack of ability to email them about issues.

I think you have an easier time buying a whole new controller. Whole goods can be priced more competitively than service parts.

Here you go. Looks like you can call them direct and get the parts.

I've replaced three this year. Gregg - how come Rainbird covers your labor? Lucky SOB. :) I've never put up a stink about it, but I'm sure I could get paid I did. I could probably bring up the whole TBird fiasco, and threaten to go all Hunter. But I am about to b!tch and complain about the DV valves.

I'd heard of other guys getting their labor costs covered but was always left out. This time the new contractor rep offered. I told him this was my go-to residential controller these days, and how I hoped this was an isolated problem.

They cut a check to my distributor on my behalf in Rain Bird Bucks, which I think just means he was credited on his Rain Bird order. Guess I was in the right place at the right time.

I was burned on T-Birds years ago. But then I switched to Toro Super 700s and got burned on those too. And I'm not going to even get into Toro Vision controllers.

I was paid a bunch on the TBirds, and absolutely hate the 700s and the Visions. Glad I never installed those.

I installed a few systems with the S700 heads, mostly on account of needing reliable low-angle coverage. No disasters, but not the reliability to compare with PGP heads.

Thanks to SoCalLandscapeMgmt I contacted Rainbird and they are sending the board that I need, to fix the MV ERR. My labor is always free. thanks to everyone for their help.
