I just received a phone call from someone who just read post from months ago. He was googling and a post I had made showed up and he was able to contact me because of it. It was about the wire stripper I bought and posted info on.

But people who could be your customers are also reading your posts and possibly making a decision whether to contact you or not based on what you post.

This is another reason this profession needs a contractors only forum, no dist and no manuf. Once we get that someone needs to start a buying group. (25 top contractors + 50K buy in + 1.25Mil buying power= LOWER PRICES

Now you are talking! I have been interested in this idea for years... the only problem is getting the ball rolling between so many disparate (no not desperate!) businesses and owners.

I have envisioned a type of buying group that operates as a co-operative. Probably too 'socialist sounding' for a lot of the right of center types in the USA but I believe the idea has legs. A good winter project for sure.... stay tuned.

James this is already working wonders for the other professionals working in the same homes that we are already in, we are just behind the ball. I had a owner of another trade tell me that he is buying products at lower prices than he has paid in years and some of those products had seen double digit increases in the last 16 months for his competitors that don't have the drive or the volume to join. He is enjoying profits instead of breaking even in a highly competitive market. We just need someone that can put it together? They could easily be compensated for their adminstrative and oversite of the program.

Well I am interested. Buying groups work for all sorts of businesses across the spectrum of industries. Now to clone myself so that I/we can have enough time to start up another enterprise! I am 100% certain it would be sucessful, if even on a small scale serving only a handful of designers/contractors. With JIT delivery and the ever increasing competitive nature of manufacturing and production in our industry I am certain that we could form a very good relationship with the better manu's.

I don't want to pour any cold water on the notion, but I hear tell there was some kind of contractors' ad hoc group that once upon a time delivered some sort of ultimatum along these lines to Bill Locklin.

I'm not privy to any details, and I am not looking to gather any from others who know, but from what I heard it got ugly.

No worries Gregg... I don't think that any buyers group that I would be involved in would attempt to exert any undo pressure or ultimatiums upon its members or suppliers/manufacturers such as what happened way back when...

It comes down to the character and integrity of those involved I guess.

Have a great day.

A buying group would work great for the commodity items, mainly wire, but with so many of us having our preferences for a certain brand of fixture, and or model within that brand, a buying group could be challenging to make successful.

You are right Sean... as I said it would be difficult with so many disparate "members", however, that is not to say that a core group of a handfull of like minded contractors could not make a go of it.

Baby steps.

My fixture loyality is only based on design, quality, and price. Some companies have some great people, but many of my favorite peeps seem to be at companies that I don't buy much from. Great people don't equal great products, I wished it was that easy.

That why some folks use cryptic terms as their user ID, they want the warm blanket of anonymity.

The way I see it, anonymity in a place like is either from cowardice (not being willing to "own" your words) or a deliberate attempt to make mischief, spread misinformation, or avoid scrutiny from your competitors...

I've said a few dumb things here from time to time... oh well... and apologized when I needed to....even received a couple of veiled threats (anonymous of course) but I will continue speaking my mind...
