Larry, I would think so. Mine is worth about that much and still going strong. It is a 2001 Exmark Z 48 cut. Last year I did have to replace the engine. So I also went ahead and replaced the seat(wood had rotted out), had the deck welded in a few spots, and had the pumps adjusted. When I got it back it was like a new mower. Anyway my point being, I decided to sink money in that one instead of buying a new one. I plan on keeping this one for years to come.

How amny hours will one run, I see some on ebay with 1500-2000 hours.

That is what I have heard as well. Mine does not have that many hours. But as I said I had to replace my engine. I now change the oil every 50 hours. Very expensive lesson. Keep the engine service and the other factors are
1)Deck.........have it welded before small issues become big ones. Much cheaper than buying a new deck
2)Spindles......some will last forever and others will not........just luck of the draw in my opinion
3)Hydralic pumps........these will wear out eventually, but from my experience they last forever.
Those 3, along with the engine, are the big expense issues to keep in mind.

I just purchased a Gravely 34Z with 60 hours for 2500.00. The deals are out there you just have to be patient. The first thing that I did was narrow my search down to two or three mowers size and brand wise. I would search ebay, craigslist, and this site everyday. I finally saw the Gravely in Alabama on ebay for 2800.00 but it now and called the guy and offered him 2500.00 cash. He jumped all over it, but I had to drive 4 hours one way to get it. I think the drive was well worth it. Just keep searching and make a wise decision and you will find a good used machine.

I just noticed you were in Alabama. Have you tried Southeast Auction?

Ive been to Southeast auction but didnt buy anything.

I plan on going full time next year and Im not sure what size yards I will be doing. If someone wants me to mow 3 acers I want to be ready. I currently have a homewoners 54" Husquvarna rider that gets me through for now. So Im figuring 3000 for a used ZTR that can get me through the first 2 or 3 years.

That sounds like a good gameplan Larry. I do buy my mowers new. My set up is a Walker and an Exmark(both 48inch cut). I usually buy my mowers through financing. I don't like to owe for more than one at a time. So currently I owe for 3 more years on my Walker. Which means I need to get another 3 years out of my Exmark. This also allows for getting maximum use from a mower. It has worked for me so far. Good luck with it.

My plan is to keep Debt free, so Im forced to start out with some used stuff, I would go up to 4000 for a ZTR but it would have to be a real nice one. I plan on buying a Quick 36" new. I am still looking fora Box truck and that will run from 5000 to 10000$. No more money to invest at that point.

i bought a 2005 ferris 1s1500 52" 25hp kawai in 2006. It was a trade with 220hrs. Still running strong and serviceing 10-13 lawns a day.

Think I can find something like that for under 4000?

I just bought a Ferris IS 1500Z with 21 horse Kawasaki, 48 in deck for $3800. Did I mention it only had 38 hours on it! Guy was wanting to start a lawn care business and it failed, sat in his garage for over two years unused. There are deals out there, just be patient.

Hey Larry. Just bought a 2003 Hustler mini z, 44", 19 kaw, suspension seat, with 156 hours for 3100. It runs great! Changed the oil, filter, plugs, and sharpened the blades, and now it runs like new. The mower retails for 7399. The deals are out there for sure! Guys at the dealer told me that if you run full synthetic in the engine and change oil every 50-75 hours you can easily get over 3000 hours with proper maint (valve adjust, etc.). Plan on having my new baby for many years. It takes me 45 minutes to mow my largest yard (1 acre grass).

Ive been buying equiptment on ebay all this year, some of the stuff is like new and Im sure I could sell it and turn a small profit.
The good thing about used equiptment is that can almost be like money in the bank.

absolutely, especially in this business. its not like a used car where there is a huge risk of buying someone elses problem. many guys get gung-ho about starting and they think of all the money theyll make (:hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::ha mmerhead:)
and they go out and buy tons of new equipment and they dont make it. most of the mowers i buy (i buy all used currently b/c i save soooo much money) are mowers that the owner needs the cash more than the mower so it sells.

Well i paid $3700 and ferris gave me a 1 year warranty. Go to the dealers and ask about trades and demos.

Hey Larry,

Craiglist had been my buddy when it comes to equipment up here in MN. I paid $600 for a good used WB at the beginging of the season. I am doing the same as you with cash all the way. Once that made me enough I upgraded other items. Just last night I picked up a Exmark Lazer Z 60" with 1225 hours in great shape for $2900. All I need is to get two seasons on that until I can purchase a new one. Good luck in your searches.

Just keep an eye out. I picked up an 2002 bobcat ztr 61" 25hp koler 950 original hours for 2500 from a fellow LS member. The deals are there, just takes time to find them.

you might also try looking at pawn shops. theysometimes have mowers worth it but not always. just thought it would help.

Edge, don't you think most of those pawned mowers are the stolen ones listed right here on this site? Not many pros without a substance abuse problem would take 500 bucks form a guy at a pawn shop for their ZTR. You'd have to be pretty hard up. Buying formthose shady folks is just keeping the market for stolen equip alive IMO.

The pawn shops around here sell junk at new prices.
