View Full Version : Pond clean-up

My husband had a friend with an excavator dig a pond on my ten acre parcel, thinking it would work as a recreational pond. Well it's been about 4 years and my pond about 100'x100' with an estimated 15' deep end is just a murky mosquito breeding station. We got lucky the bottom is mostly clay and it seems like there may be a spring feeding it. It doesn't dry up but after the first two years no one really wants to go in it, you don't know if there are snapping turtles, there's certainly some fish and the egrets like it when no one's around, have had some geese stop in but none taking up residence. It has a fair amount of cattails around the edge, and some weeds, but the approach to the water is either very sharp drop or marshy weeds with the kind of mud that sucks your shoes off. What can I do to make this a decent swimming/ recreational pond.

Here are some pictures of the pond the area nearest the camera is the deep end. The far side of the pond has a dirt trail that is usually covered with water.

This really depends on how much money you want to spend. Aeration is needed in your case. You could put in wetland filters in each corner that would filter the water, but that could be expensive. You could also get a fountain to aerate the water.

Fountain will help keep the skeeters down too

With the depth of 15 feet I would recommend bottom aeration.
