ok well i am only 14 and me and my dad started Ernie mankins and sons construction in august of 2007... this was a first time thing for me but this is a new beginning for my dad after goin out of business after fifteen years of bobcat and mini excavator work mostly doing underground. But currently we do irrigation, retaining walls, pool backfills, electric service to pools, lot clean up, and just anything that comes our way. but here is a pic of our rig with a rental bobcat 430.

but i have been running equipment since i was five and been around dirt work since i was born. so i am still learning but i have learned quite alot in the little time i have been doin this.

Heck, I'll post a few pictures.

Basic Info:

My name is Mitch
Fifth year operating as a "business", first year as a legit operation
Around thirty weekly maintenance customers; residential and commercial
I have a part time guy (retired gentleman) who works with me a few days a week, some days grandma helps me out (she stays in the truck)
Lots of landscape work (aerating, bush/hedge trimming, clean ups, etc.)
Going to be advancing into the snow/ice division as soon as I can legally drive alone (February 25th, 2009)
All equipment paid cash (with the exception of a SMALL portion of the truck, special thanks to dad for helping me there)
I do hope to make a career out of this, but stay a solo operation. I would also like to get into other things (investment related stuff)

Here's a few pictures of the stuff. No updated "fleet" picture, but that may soon change:usflag:

I'm eighteen and working towards a business license but i'm covered by insurance, i have nine yards with eight clients(one pays me to trim both her's and her neighbor's who started mowing her yard after her husband died and another i use their mower because they live ten miles away and have over an acre that i'm responsible for, it is a larger cut than mine, as well as maintenance on the mower when the owner doesn't get a chance to do it) and as for my equipment check my sig. line. and yes I really need to get a trailer traveling at 5mph gets a little old, but i've put six years into this and have not low-balled yet.

I laugh at all the kids that are dying to get out on the road and drive. If you guys only knew what a hassle driving is. Traffic, construction, gas prices and being late. I'll give it a year in your new trucks, and before you know it you will be pissed like all the other adults on here that are on the road 7 days a week.

18 years old, about 30 accounts, started mowin my neighbors yard 7 years ago(I think it was 7 i have kind of stopped counting) with my dads mower, then bought a snapper 21", then worked up to having the snapper in the back of a lawn tractor cart towed my grandapa's old lawn tractor, then bought my 32" encore used, then bought my 52" dane new. Except for the trailer which my pop lets me "borrow", all equiptment was paid for my self with no help from parents (yes even my car). Heres the lastest pic of my setup, click the link in my sig to see more pics.

hey jlm335.. is that your out fit ?? the bobcat mini ex?
NO!!! I hate that model!! Thats the only bobcat equipment I have ever ran that I wasnt happy with. We usually rent the 335, hint the name, but we were cramped on space so we got a zts machine on that job, that was the crappiest machine, only had a 24in bucket, yeah we loaded a fullsize dump truck with a 24in bucket, the sad thing is the 430,the machine on the trailer, couldnt handle a bigger bucket and I wouldnt put a bigger bucket on it, it was just a gutless machine....

very nice fellas. i remember those days too. may dad started this company, i workd on his crew on the weeknights and weekends. then after i wanted to get into this more he let me use a walkbehind in the back of my truck to go mow lawns without him. that started it all. it blossomed into needing a trialer and bigger more mowers etc. good luck and be safe

i never said you didnt have that many accounts. all im saying is that is hard to beleive. think about it your still in school which means you dont have that much time to cut yards, so you would have to have a crew working while you are at school. do you?

I was thinking about it, but I icksnayed it, just not enough time in the day to do everything.. I'd have to leave jobs early to go cut grass when I really want the excavation side of the biz to get bigger, not maintenance..

yeah i know there is alot more money in excavating then maitence. in a few years i am gunna do mostly hardscaping.

I don't know about New York, but in Michigan you need to be at least 18 to register a DBA certificate in your name. And sure, you can get insurance through the DBA, but the signer has to be 18, or older, as legally, the contract would be non-binding since the signer is not technically an adult.

And go ahead and call me out on this, I just went through all this last year.

Also-

How do you have any kind of business banking account? It's a federal law that you have to be 18 to opening a checking or savings business account? And to open a business account, you need a DBA.

Ok, this is my last post on the subject. Arguing on here is dead stupid.

The IRS doesn't care how old you are. If you own a business, they are happy to collect money on the money you made.

Plain and simple, the IRS sure doesn't care how old you are.

I'm not 100% sure, but the IRS would probably say something along the lines of,
"His parent/guardian should claim his income, since he can't"

I know when I was ten, and had 3 paper routes, they told me my parents had to claim my income.

Really? So my parents should have to claim my income, should have claimed my brothers income when he was still living there? Along with my other brothers and sisters? That just doesnt seem right?

It doesn't. But then again, half the stuff the IRS takes from us doesn't seem right either.

But, I just look at it as the cost of owning my own business.

I went through 2 weeks ago during my free time and cut all of the pines what were that(anywhere from 2 to 12ft tall down) and then I am goin to pull all of the fallen trees out and clean all the brush and little stumps off the bank. Also got to remove that pine that is fallen(obviously) We actually started on this job a year ago around the 21st and 22nd, and we've worked on it on and off since money has been saved up, now we are goin to come in and finish it and finish it right. But we actually put 11hours on the T190 just clearing the top of the dam off so you could get around it, we didnt pull bout a couple trees with the 190 out, that was a biotch, so we are bring in the 335 next week to do it once and for all..

Nice Pics and Equipment everyone!!!

I am 16 years old. I have been doing this business for about 5 years now. It all started when a naibor wanted me to cut there lawn because they were going out of town for a month and the rest is history. I have 8-10 regular weekly lawn mowing accounts.(waiting for a reply from some quotes) I do all residential work. During the summer i work all 10-12 hour days at a boat yard then go and cut a lawn or 2 after work. I am still in school and plan on going to colledge for landscape arch. and bis. management. Hopefully one day opening up a lawn mower repair shop and still have a crew of guys go out to cut lawns. Have a safe cutting season everyone.

that job was nice, it was all fill(no rock, or grass, nothing to rake out!:cool2:) dirt, but dont let it fool ya, I've done numerous jobs(one not to far from that one) that you could bounce the mattox off of, and its mostly sand ;) Not to far from my place it goes to red clay, soil changes alot around here..
