Why does no manufacturer offer a small to midsize truck with a three or four cylinder diesel engine? Wouldn't this make a great vehicle for the solo type operators or out running estimates and so forth.

1. Heavy
2. Emissions weighted towards gas vehicles make it tough for diesels to pass
3. Despite 1 & 2, they're working on it. Dodge should be coming out with one in '10 or so I think, Ford had one in the works but the fallout with Navistar scotched it, I believe.

A little dope on 'em here, not much out on them yet.

Nope! Fords got one comin out next year. And its not a navistar engine. Its in house based off the land rover diesel in europe.

All the manu's (Ford, Chevy, Dodge) will have half ton diesels by next year. Very very exciting! They will most likely all be getting high 20's for mpg's.

Here's some Ford info, not sure if it's any good or not though.

Years ago, a friend had a Ford Ranger diesel. Got like 40 mpg, and ran forever, over 300,000 miles, I think.

Ford currently produces 4 cylinder Ranger diesels. I saw one in a late model pickup while in Mexico a few years back. I doubt our governments regulations will let us ever see one.

You gotta go across the pnd to get them, but good luck importing them, the gas companies don't like them!

C'mon GM, get that 1/2 ton Diesel back out there. It's been 10-11 years since you've offered one!

No, it's a V-6. It's made by Cummins, but it's an entirely new motor. If you want a 4bt 1/2 ton you need a 1/2 ton and a Fed Ex truck, some tools, and some mechanical knowledge. You'd probably have a 30 mpg truck when you were done though.:)
