Hi all,
what is the difference between an gmc 2500 and 2500HD?
Do they even make 1500 HD? This question may seem odd to some, however I am not at all familiar with GMC
Serious replies only.
Thanks

My guess would be that the 2500's were made before the 2500hd's. And yes, they did make a 1500hd, but don't anymore. They made it for a brief period of time.

there has to be a model that's not an HD and there has to be a difference, my uncle has the exact same truck as me, same year, same options, and his is not an HD, mine is.

a 2500 has an 8600lb GVW. A 2500HD has a 9200Lb GVW.
Thats all. They are identical trucks.
I had a 1999 2500 with the 4L80E and the 6.0. I traded it in and got a 2001 2500HD 4L80E and a 6.0. They are identical except GM had the "taller" hood and "taller" front bumper on the 2500HD's I think the 2500 was made between 1999-2004.

They are not the same, The HD models have a full floating rear end, opposed to the semi floating rear on the standard model. Just take the center cap of the rear wheels and you will see the difference, the full floater axle is a much stronger design. I would be willing to bet that there are differences in the front end too, but I have never looked

...as well as suspension differences and larger brakes to accomodate the increased towing/hauling demands.

To answer the earlier post on the 1500HD, this model replaced the 2500 designation in 2004 only, as GM was slow in the game to market the crewcab configuration.

KTM, my 99 had 4.10 ratio and a 14 bolt rear end.
The only time the 2500 didnt have a full floater was when it was ordered with a 3.73 rear end. 12 bolt.

If their are any differences between a 99 2500, and a 01 2500HD, they cannot be seen by the human eye. Brakes etc are identical.
Even going from my 99' to the 01' to the 02'Duramax, to the 07.5 GMC their is really no difference. This is pretty much the case that I can see when comparing a 2500HD regular cab to a 3500 SRW Regular cab.

MY 99 also had the 4.10 gears, but it was still a semi floating rear end

i have a 2002 2500hd 2 wheel drive and a friend of mine has a 2002 2500 and 2 wheel drive and the front end sets up alot higher on mine than his. and like others said there are a few minor differences between the two... but yeah they did make a 1500hd for a short time.......

Dodge & Ford's 2500's are heavy duty no option's. Chevrolets/GMC rational for a standard 2500, and then a beefier 2500HD? must be to satisfy their customers needs, or to keep the UAW workers employed.

Now correct me if I am wrong, but didn't only Chevy make the 1500HD? I could be wrong but just wondering because I have never seen a GMC 1500HD.
