i have a 1985 power ram 150 which is in perfect condition but all of a sudden im having a bad hesitation and bogs when givin gas in the engine(318 carbuerator) does any one know what it could be????

we checked the plugs and changed the aircleaner still nothing any suggestions???

It may be the cat... or something as simple as a fuel filter or pump. Check your fuel pressure at the rail.

Does your carb have an accelerator pump diaphragm? While I'm not necessarily suggesting you rebuild your carb......the primary symptom of these failing is hesitation during initial acceleration.

thanks for the reply the fuel pump filter and distributer cap were all replaced still having the same problem

I 2nd this diagnosis ..usually on Carbs the accelerator pump is the problem ..

tried rebuilding carb still not running rihgt next up is the cat.

ditch it and get something with fuel injection. by 85 both ford and gm had it.

It sound like , some one for got to hook up a vacuum line up or vacuum leak. Check the line to the distributer .

Around here I don't "check" no plugs :p
I replace mine every 20,000 miles, that's double platinums, standard plugs would be every 10,000.

So if I go through the trouble of pulling one then the whole lot gets replaced,
and if that doesn't fix it then the wires and cap and rotor are next.

On that note you probably just need a new cap and rotor, but...

LOL! Changing plugs every 10-20,000 miles is not only a waste of time... it's almost wreckless. You are increasing the probability of a stripped thread 10 fold. Most spark plugs today are rated for 100000 miles.

I was going to say the same thing. Same plugs for 70K now.

Have carb rebuilt. It could be the accelerator pump or try to adjust the carb to see if you can get it to run a little better.

I used to do that, worst horse garbage I will never ever follow such extended maintenance intervals again!
I refuse to drive a vehicle that suffers from hesitation, missfiring, reduced performance, or any other issues
related due to not following up on periodically scheduled recommended maintenance for high performance engines.

From NGK:
New plugs maintain peak engine performance and efficiency . They improve cold starting and reduce the voltage requirements on the vehicle's ignition system, decreasing the chance of misfire and leaving more amps for the starter and injectors. New spark plugs also minimize the risk of catalytic converter failure, something that is costly to replace. One misfiring spark plug has the ability to dump enough raw fuel into the exhaust to overheat and damage the converter.

Recommended spark plug change intervals vary according to the type and age of the vehicle. For instance, a 1984 Oldsmobile would probably require plug replacement every 25,000 to 30,000 miles, while a 2007 Chevy Malibu would need replacement every 100,000 miles. Powersports applications very greatly. In most applications spark plugs are changed every year.

Forget the source:
Plugs don't just go 100,000 miles then foul or fail all of a sudden.
They erode gradually and constantly the entire time, once that erosion has gotten past a point
the vehicle already suffers from some power loss, most folks who drive it daily don't even notice it.

And maybe 20k miles is too often?
Then again my 1995 Dodge truck doesn't hesitate, ever.
Neither do my mowers or anything else, not because of that crap.
And yes, they are high performance engines, every last one of them.
They sound and run like racing engines, the way it should be.

Just like folks who claim oil can be let go for 6-7,000 miles.
It's just not the way I do things.

Btw start it by hand then torque it down right.

I agree with topsites on that one I change my plugs on the old 440 more frequently then on our new trucks
