As I say all the time to customers at my day job (service & parts manager)....Know what you have and know what you need!!!!! This mainly pertains to the homeowners.

Hey sawman----

This is my favorite........ Customer says.....I have a Toro GTS and I need yada, yada, yada. I say........Ok your mower is Guaranteed To Start. What is your model number. Customer................

The first one I only say in my head. The second one is used at least once a week.

when i was a part guy, I kept a random old part under the counter, and when confronted with said stupidity, i produced the aforementioned part. I never had to do it twice to the same person. I would say, "here you go". They would say, "that's not what i need", and i would go, "oh well it came off an orange simplicity".
Ironically, once that was the exact part he needed. Boy did i look like a genius...

I will never figure this one out. A customer knows they are calling a lawnmower repair shop and they want to know if we sharpen blades. Nope, we only work on bladeless mowers. Customer again.........

Here's your sign!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hammerhead:

I love this one.

That one alone made me stop going to dealers.

They sell and service a machine yet are too dumb to look at a part and recognize what the hell it is.

Funny I can call an online company with little more than a Bobcat 2004 ZTR with a 23hp kawi....and they have never sent me a wrong part yet.

Yet the dealer sits there "DUHHHH, I DONT KNOW NUTTIN WIT NO NUMBERS"

I could always walk to their shelf and pick it out with no numbers needed.

But then again they probably wouldnt stock that PTO switch that they only order 2 a week yet get 4 calls a week for.

I recommend you try J-thomas or another online company. I made the switch from dealers years ago and will NEVER be back. The parts are sometimes 1/3 to 1/2 the price and the same or just as good.

Hopefully you know how to work on your own stuff.

If not your stuck with a dealer and his "ILL LOOK AT IT AFTER THESE 25 HOMEOWNER MURRAYS"

You are definately right on with this post.

oh god not this thread again, who was it that started this the last time.?well bobcat is one thing, i know we sold em, they hadn't changed in 10 years. the ztrs anyway. most dealers worth their stuff puts commercial guys first. unless its the commercial guys that dont pay their bill, that's a different story... but when you say you have an 18 kohler, is it an aegis? a command? a Magnum? a model number ensures that you get the right part and get out of our hair and you go make money.

Obviously someone has an issue that has nothing to do with THIS post. I believe the original post is more in the context of, if someone posts a question on THIS board that they need to provide SOME INFO :hammerhead:

And since almost no one reads this STICKY that needs to be in BOLD and a different COLOR http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=144040

WE often spend the first 3-4 posts asking basic info that the person could have answered in the 1st post.

No one posting answers to questions on this board is getting paid:cry: and the more info provided upfront can help YOU get your POS back up and running quickly and for little to no coin out of pocket.

That is an untrue statement....ZTRs have and do change in the last 10 years. The entire model number is needed to make sure you have the right parts. Take the model #942233....there is a suffix after the number that is needed.....there is a 942233A, 942233D, and 942233E. If you came in and wanted a hydro pump for your machine and said you had a model #942233 (which most people can't even give you that) and we look up a hydro pump for you #4121333 and you take it home to install it.....and it is wrong. You come back and rip me apart that you had to travel over hill and dale because I screwed up and gave you a wrong pump. Then I ask you to confirm you model number and you call your 6yr old daughter to go out and look at the model number of your machine and she tells us that it is a 942233E. Then I look up the pump of #4137278. And that is the right pump for your machine.

This happens all the time with all of the different brands of equipment. We are only as good as the info that you give us. Same goes with the walkbehinds all of the digits of the model number are needed when looking up parts. 20years ago...yea...most were the same. NOT TODAY!

Some of the guys chime in here to help out with problems, but if they are not given all of the info they may not be able to help is all the original poster is saying. We are not getting paid to help you out but are willing to.......Take it easy on us.....

Try something even worse. Try guessing what 16 HP Kohler someone has. Single or Twin, Horizontal or Vertical, K, Magnum, Aegis, Courage, Command, Triad, when all they know is that is a Kohler.

Once you get that part down, then you need the spec #. And finally the Serial number as there are breakpoints where parts change. There are 140 Spec #s for the K-341 alone. And some OEMs used more than one Spec # for their equipment. 170 Spec numbers for the M-18 which includes both 16 and 18 HP twins.

OK your right on that, but most guys who needed big stuff like pumps/motors and engines would leave us the machine. besides we usually just ordered the bdp-10l or a what ever it was, and we never ran into a problem, but i may be missing out on part of that story. But for most parts on the bobcat, you'd be OK. And as for the customer being able to go to the shelve to pick it out, well yea for you! you took the part off you know what it looks like. What you do call it by its right name? what if (like bobcat) they used 3 different parts for one part number with no serial number breaks????
PS i thought the "A" suffix denoted factory equipped with suspension seat? when the hell did they start throwing e's and d's in there?

GrassHappens....The Letter suffix means they changed something in the machine, whether it is the parts used, or design. Some models have no suffix's and some have 3 or 4. I know the ZTRs changed pumps in the same models and the only way you would know that other than looking at the numbers on the pump would be to go by the entire model number including the suffix when looking the parts up. Thats the same with the walkbehinds and aeration equipment. Look at the parts breakdowns in the model numbers that I used as an example in my previous post....the pumps changed from the A to the E suffix. If you went by the old rule "they are all the same" you would have looked up the wrong pump.
