I have about 400 yards that is 10 feet wide of ditch on one of my commercial accounts. They said I could spray the ditches with weed killer instead of trimming them (which is a REAL pain).

I'm not really worried about the cost, but I want some type of weed control that will prevent anything from coming up for a long time. I also have access to contaminated diesel fuel and kerosene.

How well would a mix of 4.5 gal kerosene + bag of table salt + a few oz. of dish soap work? I have read that dish soap makes the salt and such stick to the plant well.

I am considering using salt because I have read if used correctly no plants will grow for several months, which is exactly what I want.

So if price is not an issue (to an extent) what is the strongest/longest lasting weed control product I can make?

C'mon Diesel Fuel Or Kero.,and Contaminated At That!!!!!!! If Price Isnt An Issue Just Hit With Non Selective Herbicide And Follow An App. With A Pre-m. Or Just Spray It A Few Times A Year. I Hear Crossbow Works Pretty Good.
Does This Drain Into A Retention Pond Or Any Body Of Water?

No it doesn't. What is wrong with kero or diesel fuel in the mix? Forget that I said contaminated, it is the same as the stuff you buy but the sulfur levels are off so it is junk.

I just want something that will last longer than glyphosate so I don't have to spray the ditch every month. I read that salt will ruin the soil and nothing will grow for a couple months.

YOU CANT SPRAY DIESEL FUEL!

It's a ditch in the middle of a 50 acre field. Why would it matter?

It Can Possibly Get Into Underground Water Supply Somewhere.
Try To Find A Total Vegitation Kill Herbicide And Maybe Follow Up With Primasol Some Paving Companies Used To Use It Or May Still Do

Sorry to mess with you guys so bad but I had to get my laughs out somehow. When I originally started the thread I was going to asked if the "salt trick" actually worked, but couldn't resist having some fun.

So anyways, in all seriousness, does mixing salt with herbicides such as glyphosate prevent weeds from coming back?

Give me a call if you need something killed. We can help you out. I would hate to see you dealing with Don Vigh (Ohio Dept Agr) on this one. He would rip you apart. Rightfully so I might add. We have right of way sprayers on one 4x4 truck, a 30' boom, or hose reel w/gun, or the ATV mounted boom or wand, or a backpack if it is very non-accessible by wheeled units. Please don't spray diesel on anything but the inside of an engine for ignition purposes. We are just down the rode and sub-contracting would be much cheaper than the fines imposed. Good luck.

So, to answer your question, yes, salt WOULD prevent weeds from coming back-for a short time. Not nearly as long as a good herbicide. Not to mention illegal and an environmental hazard.

I am not sure how long you have been in business, but it is unlawful to spray keros. or any other product that can contaminate ground water. I promise you, you will be alot cheaper to hire someone with a lisence to spray this for you. instances like this can make it hard on the ones that have put alot of time and money is the spraying business. I wouls use something like Crossbow hercide. If you use some thing like Sahara, do not forget that you will be help responcible for any damages to the environment or to others. It wouls not be advised to go the cheapest route.
