Most likely a part of the Gov linkage. From a shop labor cost standpoint it may not be cost effective for them to fix, he may be right. But you can sure give it a shot yourself. You will most likely have to pull the engine off of the tractor and pull the sump pan off. DRAIN THE OIL FIRST! and then you will find the gov. linkage inside. Good luck. When you get it open get us some pictures and we can help you diagnose the broken part.

I would make sure 1st that the linkage has not just slipped or com loose on the outside. Was the tech able to show you anything on it or was he just interested in selling you a new engine or tractor?

Sounds like all he wanted to do was sell a new engine. Fixing at $60 per hour shop rate vs $500+ for a new engine. Cheaper to fix.

this guy came from sears and took the hood off and looked around a little and told me it would cost more for the repair than to buy a new ridder... he gave me a price of 1700.00 using all my parts and 2200.00 for all new engin
and told me the engin could not be fixed that their was to much damage done, don't know he figured their was to much damage as as soon as it started running fast i shut it down...i am going to tear it down and take a look at it and go from their.

thanks all i knew i could get help from this site.... Bob :waving:

$2200???!? it's an intek, not a vanguard.

take a whack at fixing it. if you shut it off quick, there's probably no expensive internal dmage.

kawasaki1 thanks, yes i am going to get into the engin and check it out, hope it can be fixed... every thing about the ridder is in good shape i bought it new about 8-9 years ago. in the event it can not be fixed i will try to find an engin to replace it...

thanks and have a great day Bob in Indy :usflag:

There is a company located either in Indiana or Ohio that sells motors for mowers. The cool thing about the company is they will sell you any motor WITH the adapters to swap the non-original motor in. Allows you to get a better motor without all the headache of trying to find/fab mounts. I have seen them in the Auto and RV mags at the gas stations.

swaping a motor would be nice, i am not looking forward to getting inside of this motor and finding out it can be fixed and now starts the looking for the parts. if i could find this company it would solve a lot of work for me...do you know the name of the magazine ?

Auto-rv is the mag and that is the site. But I don't think you will find the ads on their website. I don't have a copy of the magazine with me but I can find out tonight at home.

Is it ES or recoil?
Because so long the shaft size is the same and the dimensions are similar, a Kohler 17hp ES right now I'm looking at on sale $499...
The thing is shaft size and dimensions are the biggest factors, horsepower-wise anything from 15-16 to 21-22 should do but of course the closer to 18.5 the better yes.
Just something to help broaden the horizons.

And it's an engine, not a motor.
Yes, I am 100% sure of that :p

Oh btw, 18hp Briggs Intek ES $469 (also on sale)
But we need more specifics, there's no telling if either of those will fit.
The model number would be a start, Briggs stamps this number onto the side of the aluminum valve cover.
