Not 100% of what this plant/weed/tree/ is technically called but everyone around KY calls them "suckers" or "volunteer trees"
They come up anywhere and everywhere usually around Trees.
I have heard they fall down from the tree and create sapplings.
If you know what im talking about How can you prevent or kill this?

Suckers: A secondary shoot produced from the base or roots of a woody plant that gives rise to a new plant. (I will use the term tree)
source: dictionary.com
They aren't caused by anything falling off the tree. But are a different way the tree tries to make new plants. Roots and stems send them up. The best thing to do is get rid of the tree that is sending them out. You will have an adult tree close by. Replace it with a tree that doesn't have such a tendency to send out suckers.
You can spray them, with some threat of killing the main tree. Quaking Aspen do it all the time out here, often in the turf. Hit the suckers with selective broadleaf herbicide. We haven't had a problem with the adult trees doing that... yet.
The trees have more of a tendency to send out suckers if their root system is shallow, or if they are stressed. Make sure you are watering the tree deeply (watering like you would water a lawn is NOT the way to water the tree). Also have a certified arborist come in and fertilize the tree with a deep soil injection. Getting nutrients and water deeper into the ground can help keep the tree from stressing and sending out extra suckers because that stress.
Good luck!
