We have a big problem with our 2006 61 in deck turf tiger scag mower. It has a 27 hp liquid cooled Kawasaki motor and it usually been reliable but recently the problems have begun to emerge. For three months it has run fine but now when mowing, the mower will just quit out of nowhere. Sometimes you can sense when it's about to quit and turning off the blades keeps it from quitting but it's usually to late to catch. We've checked the carburator, the fuel, injectors and everything seems normal. Please give us some feedback !

Is it carbed or injected? I believe the 27 was a carb motor. Have you checked or changed fuel filters recently? Does it start right back up after it dies? Do you have a way to check for spark when it dies?

Sounds like your pto switch is going bad. Does it hold a charge? checked your safety switches latley? let us know

Wait for the unit to begin to act up and try loosening up the fuel cap(s). It may be vapor locking. It could also be a fuel solenoid on the carburator.

I'm guessing coil shorting out. I have a 27 Kohler, air cooled, had similar problem- shut off the blades and it would run fine, hesitated and sometimes quit under load. I suspected the PTO clutch and other things, but in diagnosis found it to be a coil breaking down. Just a suggestion, shop probably already checked it, but unless it is acting up at the time they test the coil, it wont show as a problem.

Only time I've ever had a mower that would cut out and IF you caught it right away you could 'save' it was due to a malfunctioning operator presence safety switch, very annoying, took me a week or so to figure this one out :p
I would be almost willing to bet it's your seat switch going or gone bad, that makes it think you done stepped up or out of the seat when you really haven't but the reason turning the blades off saves it is because you can do that so long the blades are off.
The only part that puzzles me, on my Ztr the engine cuts out if the sticks are not in the park position too...
Blades or not, can not get out of the seat...
Not sure but I'd still be willing to bet it's along these lines as well as possibly a fuel or spark related issue.

Sounds like an operator presence sensor to me, most likely the seat. I bought a fairly new Craftsman rider for $150 because the guy couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start. He told me his kid was mowing the lawn, stood up to empty the bags and the motor died, wouldn't even turn over after that. I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. It was the switch under the PTO lever, $20 fix.
