OK on my 48in Belt Drive I am having problem with the transmission. It is jumping in and out of gear. I took it to the dealer about a month ago and they adjusted the shifter linkage. It lasted for about 5 hrs of use and its back at it. Can I adjust it myself or what fix can I do that will LAST.
Im about ready just to put a new tranny on it.

Depending if its a peerless the key-ways inside might be worn out or a few might be broken. There should be 4 of them on the shaft with the shift linkage. (They are inside the transmission)

I am also assuming it is a peerless / Tecumseh.
There are some transmission repairs that involve the actual removal of the transmission, and if such is the case it is my opinion better off replacing it, but more than a few repairs can be done by simply removing the cover (in addition to the linkage and the shifter plate).
Either how, removing the cover isn't half the repair than removing the whole transmission, and so:

This is one type of repair that does not involve removing the transmission itself.
Since we do not know exactly what could be the problem, I believe it would be a worthwhile idea to remove the cover for a close inspection, it might be just as was said something with the keys in which case you'd save a load of time and money, or maybe not but...
If I'm not sure what the problem is I always go for the cover first.
DO make sure to get yourself some gasketing material and bentonite grease.

I'm going to guess that what your dealer's mechanic did was adjust the set screw on the trans. What the set screw does is force a spring against a small steel ball that holds the shifter fork in place.
Don't pop the top on the trans first, here is what to look for. In the top cover, find where the set screw is, it will be inline with the shifter lever on the out side of the cover. Back the set screw out, take the spring out and see if you still have a steel ball there, chances are you don't.
Now pop the top of the case. look for the steel ball. On the inside of the case, you will see the shifter fork, that is the part that comes out of the case at the top. There are little indentations where the ball would ride/sit. If they are worn away, you will need to replace it.
Some times the top of the case where the ball comes out will be worn as well, in which case you would also have to replace the top cover
All in all, you are better off to replace it like MM77 suggested. I agree with Tops on this, mess with it in your off season :)
Good Luck
