Well I finally got my postcards made and shipped to me and I am really pleased with how they came out! I ended up getting 5,000 made and hope to see a 1-3% return. I have picked specific areas to target, mostly high end residential, hoping this will give me a better chance. Getting atleast 1-2 accounts off these will pay for my time and having them designed, shipped and then shipped to the chosen areas. We will see what I end up with:rolleyes:

Actually I am thinking about buying a local place that is going up for auction here soon. That will be sometime in April so I will have to keep you and everyone else posted. Part of its heated and the other part is cold storage. It is actually 2 buildings that have a walkway in between them that looks to be added after the buildings were built.

I took my time on the design. I would say if you had the design done you would have them within 7 days if not sooner. Size is 6"x11" which is the biggest you can get. The bigger size did cost some more though, but I am fine with that.

Just wondering have you ever built a retaining wall like the one pictured on your website? I looked though the whole thread then checked out ur site, but didnt see one, just wondering. If not I hope a customer doesnt ask you to build one just like it. Me and my dad built two just like that on his property with a stone slab staircase coming down the middle. Im glad he has a skid!

Wasn't a big fan of it at all, you have lost your mind!:dizzy: I can deal with the 90 deg days, but some people don't realize that the humidity really kills ya. I went to Arizona one time when it was 115 outside and I would rather take that than 90 with humidity here!

Earlier in your thread you mentioned buying a house. How is that working out for you? I bought my house in the fall of 2010, I was 20 years old. It's an old house (1925), on a small lot, with neighbors way too close. I like the house it's self, even kinda enjoy doing some remodeling here and there, but I can't stand not having more room. Yes the house has been a great house for me. I have added some things since I have moved in in 2009 which includes a privacy fence, a back deck and also making the lawn look a little bit better than when I first got it. My neighbors are great, never really complain about anything. Old houses every once in awhile you have to put some money into but I got a heck of a deal on mine!

Sometimes I wish I didn't have a house and still lived at home, I would have a lot more equipment and would not be having a mortgage payment every month, but I would also have to rent a shop because I would have no where to put any of my equipment. But then again, now I am getting so much that I am looking for a shop to buy or atleast ground to put one on. Land is so expensive!!!!:dizzy:

Oh no worries. And before this year all of my business came from word of mouth are the advertising on the sides of the trailers. They really helped a lot. I also did have some yard signs out, which I have got some business off of as well.

Wiedmann
02-09-2012, 12:56 PM
I've been using yard signs the most but it got to the point where people would take them whether they were on someones property or at a street corner. I could see someone taking them if they aren't on private property but it nerves me when people walk onto a customers of mines property and takes them. I've drove past your trailers several times and they look very professional. I would say they draw a lot of attention! Postage is what will kill me on doing postcards so I have to weigh the benefits and see if its really worth it for me as I'm a small solo operation.

Very nice website and business cards. So many times you see sites all cluttered or unorganized but yours looks good. Was also curious if you do dormant pruning? We've been doing alot of it the past few years and not only does it save time pruning when you make an 8 foot shrub 3 feet...but also its money and something to do in the winter when its not snowing. Well done thus far and good luck this season!

I'll be 21 next week (feel like 30), my business is probably about the same size as yours and I'm looking to buy a house but I'm afraid of being turned down becuase of being self employed, young and since the business has been growing by leaps and bounds the past 2-3yrs I've had to buy lots of new equipment each year, which on paper makes it look like the company really isn't making a ton of money.

I actually bought my house when I was 18. I had a good credit rating because at a young age I started buying everything with a credit card, and then at the end of each month I would pay it off in full. I also gave under 100k for my house so I did get a very good deal on it. Of course I had to have a co-signer in the beginning.

An update on my ferris vs. exmark test.

Exmark: Heavier in the front end it seems like which is nicer when going up hill. Narrow stance not near as good as ferris on hills.

Ferris: Light on front end, great on hills. I think it stripes better imo. Wider stance and at a better price also.

In all honesty after running the ferris I will probably never buy another exmark walk behind again, I am that impressed. I couldn't be happier.

On to this season. I have picked up a substantial amount of new clients. The post cards I sent out has really been a great return and I do believe I will be doing them again next year. I still am getting calls 3 weeks after them going out, and my phone literally will not stop ringing. So far I have picked up over 30 new turf program customers, and close to 10-15 more mowing accounts. Still waiting to hear back on a cemetary, a school district and also a nice 6-7 acre commercial site. Hope everyone elses year is off to a busy start! I will be sure to get some pictures of some high end residential customers we picked up this year!

I was just curious if some of your properties require the use of walk behinds or you just prefer them? I am looking into another mower and considered that same exact mower and a compliment to my 60 inch zero turn. How efficient is the walk behind compared to the zero turns?

I don't really have any properties that require z-turns, but on some I would rather use a walk compared to a z. Sometimes it is just easier to use a walk and also sometimes faster. It all depends on the property.

Why would it be easier and faster to use a walk behind than a z? Using a z would save on your legs and engery possible to do more property. The less on your feet the more you can last longer.:dancing:

I have a fulltime job and I cut grass part time. But it's dam near like I'm doing it fulltime. I have about 35 resdentials and 4 commercial properties. Making about $40,000 a year cutting grass part time. I really wanna do this fulltime.

I didn't say that right at the top, I have some properties that require a z and some that don't. Some properties (hilly) are sometimes easier to mow with a walk compared to a z because we can go faster with a walk, don't have to worry about sliding down the hills and also tearing up and turf. That is why i say sometimes it is easier just to use a walk, even tho I would like to stay lazy and stay on the z's!

-2011 Ferris Walk behind, the DD 52"/20hp love it so far

To you and everyone else that is asking about the stihls. I really like them so far. I have to be honest I took the gaurd off on the once I use, because I like running a lot of string in certain situations. This is going to be pretty straight forward, but I would say one of the 3 main reasons I have gotten to where I am now is...

1.DON'T LOWBALL, we are all in this business to make money, and a lowballer only hurts himself and everyone in the industry.

2. Customer relations/ customer satisfaction. Key to having a great committed client base.

3. Qaulity of work, go the extra mile to make sure the job is done right. Example read # 2.

Down to 2 guys right now, had one leave because his disease was acting up, no biggie tho I am not mad or anything that kinda stuff happens. Start out paying $10 per hour, after that based on their performance they get more. I would rather pay by the hour instead of by the job.
