Well guys I told you awhile back on my toys thread that I was going to post some pics of my equipment and some of my work! I first want to exlain how I got to where I am with my age alittle that way for some of you who don't know me very well from this site you will now. My name is Logan and I am from Iowa. I started my business when I was 13 mowing my own lawn for money and the started with my first real account...my neighbors! I was using a 21 and thats it, not even trimming or blowing anything off! Once my grandpa passed I inherited his craftsman 42' rider and started mowing some more lawns. Once I reached my freshman year I found out that this is what I wanted to do the rest of my life. After realizing this I had a sit down with my parents and asked if they would be willing to take out a loan for a mower. NOW MOST PARENTS WOULDN"T EVEN THINK OF TAKING OUT A $8500 loan, so I guess I am blessed with my parents. So once I got my mower( my lazer) I started going out and passing out door hangers to get more people. Now of course I made the monthly payments( gave my parents the money) and had some left over for myself. Finally last year I paid off my lazer and bought a metro hp. I paid cash for this which was a big thing for me! I also bought a JD x720 for other jobs like spring and fall cleanup. I finally just paid the JD off so the rest is just money! Now at the age of 17 I have 53 accounts all together including 45 residential and 8 commercial! I am very proud to show some pics(alot) and would be happy to answer any questions! Thanks in advance!

That is my goal! Right now my school is trying something new and if u finish most of your highschool classes early they will pay for your college until u graduate, so right now I will be taking landscape drafting and pestcide app! I think that this is a great idea! This means by the time I get done with highschool(last year) I will have a years worth of landscape and pesticide under my belt! WOOT!:weightlifter:

Way to go, 53 accounts at age 17 is definately somthing to be proud of! What do you use the JD for that you wouldnt use one of your other mowers for?

I have the JD more for a mower that I can beat on like mowing really tall grass that hasn't been mowed in 2 years. I also use if for thatching,(spring cleanup), fall clean up. I like it because you can put so many different attachments on as to where u can't with a lazer! Thanks for the comment but let me tell you at my age all I do is mow mow mow, and come home to a back rub from the girlfriend!

I do have a striping kit on the lazer, and just want to say that I love my lazer. Exmark has got me for a happy customer! I like the metro hp but in my opinion it doesn't cut near as nice and doesn't stripe like my lazer, but I also have the triton deck on the lazer and I think the ultracut on the walkbehind! I might be selling the walk at the end of this season and buy a new tthp 48 with the ecs, the pistol grips are becoming a pain and I am jelous of everyone that has one!

Well last year I didn't have near as many accts. So, in the morning I would hook up, drive to school with the truck and trailer and park it in the parking lot! Now I always got to school early to get a parking spot right next to the principals window, that way no foul play would occur:nono:After school I would go and mow my little heart out! Now as of this year( I haven't slacked off in school at all so I only have 2 classes a day) so I pretty much have the whole day to mow, I have it worked out where I mow all Mon-Fri and then have Sat and Sunday for a maintenance day or if it rains(back up). I do have to say juggling school with this business I have can be very stressfull sometimes, but I just keep telling myself it will all be worth it in the end!:usflag:

I agree with you 100%, I sometimes think that I should've waited until after H.S. to start a lawn biz, but a lot of stuff fell into my lap and I took it for what it was worth. The biz has affected my grades and my social life, but my friends are out there working jobs they hate and making barely $3K a year and I'm pulling in $16k in 7 months without working really hard, it's all worth it. And the satisfaction of running a biz is incredible. Keep it up and become the biggest and best LCO in Iowa!

Hey, man, I'm impressed. Not just with your equipment and accounts, but your attitude. I've seen a lot of young guys come on here with nowhere near as much business as you have and they talk like big shots. I'm glad you're in Iowa and not NC! What's that 21" in your avatar? It looks sort of like a Husqvarna.

School and work is tough. I always set up my schedule so that I'm in class in the morning and have afternoons to mow. I only have about a dozen accounts right now, so that's not too hard to take care of. I would try for a lot more, but in college you never know when you're going to get a workaholic professor who assigns tons of reading and papers. I'm majoring in marketing, so when I graduate, I'll know how to get the customers. I just have to keep up with school for now.

Are you out of debt? That's a great place to be. I've got a big check coming in this week that will payoff my mower and I'll be debt free. It's great that your parents helped you out. I bought a residential Deere F525 to start with and used it for a couple months, but it just wasn't made for the amount of mowing I was doing with it and it only went 5mph (a lot slower in heavy grass, with only a 17hp single cylinder). My dad bought it from me and gave it to a guy from church who needed a mower, then he bought my Ferris mower brand new so that I'd have a dependable machine with a warranty that would last me for several years. And when I have the Ferris paid off, maybe he'll stop acting like he's my manager!

Really sucked, thank god for 5 hour power energy shots! All together it was a good year. I have already got all my old contracts signed again for this year so that is good. I plan on going after alittle more commercial this year and also plan on getting another lazer 60"(I really like the new ones, anyone see one or hear anything on them yet?) and getting a tthp with the ecs controls and plan on getting rid of the metro hp(hate the pistol grips).

Love my truck! Love the color and the motor. I get alot of compliments on it. I am really impressed with the way it pushes snow to. I got the plow through the dealer ship so I saved $900!

I do mowing in Granger, Madrid, Woodward, Perry, Boutan and have done some in Waukee. I have one out in norwalk...it is about a 20 min drive but well worth the drive$$$ I am looking to maybe expand and get some more in Polk City and in Grimes sometime soon and then start working my way towards the commercial stuff in Des Moines.

All I can say is just make things look as good as possible, be friendly to customers and also be professional. Word of mouth is a great thing and will help alot in this business. Maybe pass out some door hangers. Advertisement is key when first starting out, then when u get big enough people will know ur name(word of mouth):usflag:

Funny story a guy that was doing a lawn in the town north of me mixed the wrong mixture and burned up half of his accounts he sprays...I think after everything was said and done he tried saying the place where he purchases his stuff from sold him the wrong product or something along the lines of that. Long story short I don't believe after everything that happened he lasted another year in the bizz. I am thinking word of mouth took care of his career in lawncare for him! Sad but just goes to show you that u need to make sure you have the right mixture and have insurance!

Thanks! I had my dad take out a loan for the lazer and then just made the payments. All of my equipment is paid for now except for my truck. This coming year I plan on buying one of those new lazers if I get another 20 accounts I am supposed to be getting(from another lco) and if that doesn't happen I will just skip the lazer and get a skid loader.

I would use one for snow removal, landscaping what ever else I could use it for. Lol I have had to turn down numerous jobs before because I didn't have a skid and I don't like renting so I might as well buy one. There are some great deals out there right now beings the economy sucks:hammerhead:

OK, thats what I had figured 'cause I'm 18 and I cant get a loan worth crap.....this year I might have to finance a new mower even though I'd rather not.

You look to be doing very well. How have you been advertising? Do you just offer maintenance or other services as well (hardscaping, landscaping, mulch, etc)??

Why dont you like renting? I do it a lot and never had any problems.....most large construction companies even lease equipment (basically a long rental)

I haven't really done a whole lot of landscaping. I have been to school for landscape drafting but honestly didn't learn anything in my opinion. The only advertisement I do is I sponsor my school, I mow the football field for free once a year(home coming game) so it is nice and striped, and in exchange they announce my name and Bussiness over the intercom at the game.

I want to become more involved with landscaping as it is a service that needs to be offered with my business. I have always like the construction side of things and landscaping would be fun. But I want to make sure that if I will be doing like retaining walls, water features and what not that I do it right because as of right now I have no idea on how to build or maintain any of those...have and advice on a class I could take maybe?

I don't like renting only because the jobs that I have turned down you would need a skid to do but it would only be for about 10 minutes of work and really wouldn't be a big money maker.

As far as classes I'm in college and took a few but they really didn't help that much. Best advice I'd give you is find a guy that does strictly construction and does good work and you'll pick it up best there.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I am trying to close on a house right now and it is driving me crazy.:dizzy: I plan on adding another trailer this year and another mower. My dad is quiting his job this year and will start working for me full time. I just have way to much to do this coming year and will need him to help. This year I picked up some local parks that will take us 2 days to mow, trim, edge and blow everything off. I will put him on a z, my friend on the jd, and me on the other z. I am also the only one that is licensed to put down pesticides so I may be able to do that while everyone else is out mowing.

Closing on house tonight at 4p.m. Will get some pics up. Has a fish pond in the back that may just end up being a project=) maybe turn it into a water feature? I will post some pics of that to so everyone could come up with some ideas. I am honestly stealing the house. Appraises at $125,000 and I am buying it for $70,250! Brand new roof, central air, wiring, furnace. Whole bunch of goodies. Only bad thing is is that they have smoked in it the last 37 years so the walls are white underneath the nicoteen stains. Literally complately brown walls now. Nothing alittle kiltz won't cure. We plan on replacing the carpet and painting the walls the first week I move in so that will be fun. Mowing all day coming home and working even more. O well

Because you have to understand that some things are just not possible, so I call BS.

No bank is giving an 18 year old money for a house in this economy. Why are we in this mess, today?? 'Cause people defaulted on their loan, banks aren't going to take a chance with an 18 year old.

They might if he's putting 30% down and his dads cosigning. But even then it'll be tight.

But my guess is dads signing on it and they'll be working on it together to flip it.

Wow man, you really got your head on straight and got great support from your dad. Having support like that is an incredible asset. Keep up the great work you're doing and hopefully you're able to take your company where you want to.

A couple quick suggestions:

1. get that logo done sooner rather than later. Branding!! (Remember, keep it simple, broadbased to enable growth without changing name and logo.) The sooner you start building that brand awareness, the better off you'll be.

2. get that enclosed trailer lettered up once you get a logo designed. It's a mobile billboard. You think that yard sign brought in business....

3. save, save, save. You're probably already doing this, but save as much $ as possible and pay for as much stuff in cash as possible. Don't get into a cycle of using credit cards. They can be very destructive!!

Again, congrats on your success up to this point. Keep up the hard work and you will be rewarded.

Your parents must be proud!!

By the way, I'm 28, and bought my first place when I was 20.

Well as of right now it is no longer a deffinant. I placed the bid, and the guy said" Well if ya ever need to raise the price, just let me know" Right now it is going threw the city to be discussed, but I have a really good feeling that I will end up getting it. Sorry for the confusion, my bad. To answer your question there is about 4 acres of mowing, but those acres include 2 baseball fields and alot of open area mowing. I have a local lco that is no longer in the undustry that is looking to sell his exmark z liquid cooled 60" for $5500. If the park accounts go threw I will buy it immeditaly. He is actually the guy that I started helping when I was young, and the mower is a dream. So quiet and has a great cut! I believe the mower only has 600 hours on it. Good to see that there are other kids my age in the industry from iowa:weightlifter: Btw my name is logan, just saw that in your name. Anyways, to tell you the truth, hard work. I worked my butt off the first few years, making stuff look the best I could. I passed out door hangers the first 2 years, made yards signs and passed out business cards like they were going out of style. Word of mouth is a great thing not to mention that it is probably the best advertisemnt you can have.

so would you say that if my dealer has an exmark lazer z hp rider 23hp kawi on it and 600 hours would it be a good buy oh and one other question how much did the truck cost you with a plow installed i wan a gmc crew cab long box duramax and allison package with a boss plow just like yours one other sugestion if your going to buy another trailer get a wells cargo it's an asome trailer

Depends on how much he is asking for it, and what condition it is in. I have seen mowers with 1000 hours on them and look brand new. Other mowers with 600 hours like the one you are talking about that look like they have been to hell and back. Just do a general check over, and ask if you could maybe demo it for a day. That would probably be the best way to really decide if you want to purchase the mower. As for as the truck goes I have a gasser, no diesel:hammerhead: I love the truck to death tho! I will have to look back and see how much it was all together, all i can say is after this winter I am so happy that I got the setup. I have heard the gmc will not warranty a plow on the front of a duramax, so that might be something to think about or look into.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hate the color of your truck, ONLY because my neighbor has the same truck, and every time I see that color truck, I cringe. He has an 07 classic body style, and he beets up his truck, he has 18,000 miles on it, and he doesn't plow with it, but he beats his tranny up so friken bad, does everything a snow plow operator does to a company truck. His tranny is going out, when I drive it, you can tell. Plus, this past winter, he went to go put it in 4wd, and he's spinning his tires gas to the floor, and he pushes the button, and all I herd was grinding and a big slam and off he went. But I sure would love to have a truck set up like you. Someday!!!

That sucks, thats a lot of money. Doesn't he work for you now? I just drove past one of my accounts that I have to do spring clean up, and there is still snow there, and it's where the city plows the snow from the parking lots around it, and what a mess they made, I'm looking forward to the money thoughpayuppayuppayup

How many flyers have you passed out? My best advice would be advertise and do great work. I have had really good luck with some yard signs. To tell you the truth I never got one call back from passing out door hangers, so I strayed away from that. Word of mouth has worked really good for me to tell you the truth. Getting to know the right people helps alot, not to mention that if you get involved with commercial, they sometimes talk to there buddies and then they want you to do it also!
