Hey guys, Im a member from plowsite.com. I really havent delved into the landscaping much. My parents asked me to lay some sod for them. The grass in thier backyard is dying because it sees shade most of the day. Can you guys suggest a sod that will survive being in mostly shade and will survive Chicago winters? I did a quick search for this but could not find any topic that addressed both issues. Im a noob to this so please no flames!

Thanks!

Rebel II is a fescue that is supposed to be good for both sun and shade. However, I do not know if it is available in a sod variety. You're limited to what will survive those cold winters. A bluegrass/fescue mix is probably a good choice also, but the best method is to put in annual mulch beds/gardens in the shade. Fighting for grass in shade is very difficult.

There are a few sod farms that sell sod that is partly comprised of fine fescue (shade tolerant grass). Almost all sod in northern mid west is 100% Kentucky Bluegrass. Try a web search for sod farms in your area and call to see if they carry sod with fine fescue.
