I have a good friend in the business that has asked me to pose this question. He is looking to buy a new Giant-Vac leaf loader for this fall. After a visit to the dealer he has narrowed it down to two engine choices. A 25 hp Kohler or a 29 hp Briggs "Big Block". We both have had great luck with Kohlers on our Lazers. He said the dealer told him that the Briggs is a new unit for this year. I told him that I have heard great things about the Briggs engines here on LawnSite. So I'm looking for some insight to help him make a choice. He is leaning toward the Briggs due to the higher hp and what I have heard here on LawnSite that the Briggs is a "torque monster".

everything i have is a kohler, my leaf vac is kohler 20 hp and it is over 10 years old and still runs great, change oil every year and ive done plugs a few times. the only big thing that went was the fuel pump and i think it was only like $50 or so for a new one about 1/2 hour to change it.

My leaf loader is a briggs. Runs perfect. Leaf loaders dont see the hours that mowers see, so any choice would be fine. If it was me, i would go the cheaper route.

I have a Briggs on my Billy Goat and it burned out in one season _with very regular oil changes (every few weeks). Requested a Honda engine for replacement and they would have to changeout too many parts so I got another Briggs engine and it seems to be doing the same thing - burning oil??? I change it every few weeks and this is just not right. I have a Koehler on my truf revitilizer and it also works under very dusty conditions with no problems - so I would say go with a Koehler. I think you get what you pay for. If you can get a Honda Engin go with those - they cost more but with oil changes last forever.
