I have a really picky customer with a patch of 2 year old sod that is geting thinner and uglier as we speak.

The growth is getting lest, the blue grass is dying etc...

It was layed on a moderately but overly compact base

The rest of the lawn is looking great, but this part has shallow, weak roots and a poor look.

The area gets plenty of water.

Is there something that I can apply that will help??

Thanks!

Sunlight? Is it getting plenty of sunlight or is it in a very shady area? May have to introduce some perennial rye into the area.

compost and lots of it. i would aerate this fall, topdress with compost, and then overseed with a lower maintenance grass. blue is a pain in the arse.

Yes, and if sunlight isn't a problem....time for a soil test.

Soil test and then slice seed some blue in this fall.

You got a bad piece of sod--put in a new healthy roll of sod.

The areas have lots of sun. Both areas are on fairly poor topsoil, so is top dressing the only answer? Shouldn't I be able to fertilize or something to compensate?

Fertilizer will help but there's not cure all for poor soil other then an amendment.

A lot of new or potentially new customers have sod die out around the two year mark. I don't know why for sure. Too juiced up from the farm pushing top growth instead of root growth in it's early stages? I have had good success slice seeding into the existing sod.

A soil test is a great idea.
