Hate it when I can't even begin to identify a plant. What in the heck is this bush? Very woody, flower bracts (according to h.o.) are purple/violet. The form is multi-stemmed bushy, there are three planted appx 36"-48" apart and are very overgrown (appx 7-8' tall). Some of the leaves have an oak-like form. This is in zone 5, MI. :confused:

Butterfly bush maybe?

not likely - here they won't return unless they are cut to ground each spring. These have never seen a sharp object and are hardy twigs and branches.

They are hybrid French lilacs.

You're kidding me! I suppose it would make sense but I've never seen them before. Either my eyes have been closed a lot around here or they don't see this location much. I hope they'll take a heavy prune this time of year. I've never had a problem with any other varieties of lilacs...we'll see. :dancing:Thanks Kate.:clapping:

I wouldn't have known what kind of Lilac but I would have guessed Lilac too. Definitely not butterfly bush - at least not like any I've ever seen. But the leaves and branch structure do look similar to lilacs and the way you describe the flowers, I think that's a pretty safe bet.

Nice job, Kate! :clapping::clapping::clapping:
