I know we have a KC thread and i do live in Overland Park. But what about the other guys who live out in Central, Western and Souhtern KS. We cant leave them out. So lets make this the official kansas thread. If this fails then oh well...if it suceeds then great. :usflag:

Topeka here. Have a Fence, Lawn & Landscape business. Am also a full time as well as part time and volunteer Firefighter (3 different departments involved). Needless to say I do pass my wife in the hallway at home occasionally! I have been to Overland Park Fire and participated in some of their training. Outstanding, top notch department you have there!

Actually not at TFD. My full time job is at the Airport (Forbes Field) on the Police and Fire Dept. I also work part time for a Fire Dept. in the SW part of the county. I also volunteer for a rural dept. in western Shawnee County that also contracts over into Wabaunsee County. Always a call somewhere it seems! Do you volunteer at OPFD or one of the other cities in JOCO ?

I just submitted apps to De Soto and JOCO Fire Dist. #1. I expect to get on with De Soto within the next two weeks.

Hi, I'm another Topeka LCO here. I spent about 18 years in the corporate world, got fed up and started a full time lawn care biz a few years ago. I am in my 5th year now. I know we have another part time LCO (H&H) because he contacted me the other day regarding my Toro walk behinds that I am getting ready to sell.

I've been to Topeka a lot for racing and other purposes. I pass through it a lot too on the way to K-State football games. How is the city? How is the Crime?

I grew up in OP/Olathe. I was in Lawn care & Landscaping there for around 30 years before taking my "act" on the road. Been gone now for around 6 years.
Go Jayhawks!!!

After 50 years of football heartbreak, and Roy teasing us with so many glimpses of the basketball prize, I'll take it!!!

The city is good for lawn work as it seems as if no one does their own lawns any more. We don't have as much high dollar real estate as you do in Johnson County, but some areas probably match up pretty well. I focus my business on the southwest side of town since it's close to where I live. This area tends to have more middle class and upscale homes and less crime than other areas. There are parts of Topeka that I wouldn't want to mow without someone staying close to the truck to keep an eye on stuff.

Topeka is a pretty good place to be for sports as we are close to K-State, KU and we have Washburn here in town.

I've got a couple of lawns in KCK(Kansas City Kansas) and if you didnt know that is a city where if your white you better be prepared for the worse. Not to sound racist but there are neighborhoods like quindarro and rosedale that are not safe to go into. I know that KCKFD doesnt go in there unless they have a police escort.

KCMO around Independance Ave. used to be the "hot spot" for crime but I know by the time I left there was a shooting or stabbing on the news just about every night from KCK in the Quindero district. It was a shame what was the mall down there, Riverside I think, off 6-35. I used to go there alot back in the '70's & 80's and I thought it was real nice but I wouldn't have gone there on a bet when I left in 2002.

I know they closed that down because it lost so much business due to rate in and around that area.

No the one I was thinking of was right off 6-35 I think it was on State or Kansas Ave. Bannister was on the Missouri side like 4-35 and Bannister Rd?

I think that was Indian Springs mall. Last time we went there which was about 18 years ago, there were homeless people sleeping inside of the mall. We left quickly.

theres homeless people all over the city. Its really sad. My dad made a statement one time that has stuck in my head for a while. If McDonalds can hire a worker who is illegal and cant even speak english but they wont hire a homeless person? Why? Is it because they dont have a good work ethic? Or the fact that they are homeless.

Maybe its because they dont have an address or a way to get to work...

Yes, Indian Springs was the one I was thinking of, Thanks. There was a Brinks armored car worker who got shot down and his deposit bag stolen right in the mall in the middle of the day I remember.

there's plenty of city buses that run around the city.

Yeah, and Im sure the rest of the people who get up and shower in the morning want to spend the mornings shoulder to shoulder with homeless people.

And what about having a legitimate address?

Most homeless dont want to work. They enjoy their vagabond gypsy lifestyle and thats all they want.

I lived in Independence for about a year shortly after college. I drove to Overland Park everyday to work maintenance on a golf course.

I always thought the KC area would be a nice place to have a lawn company.

Minus North KC - lol :)
