What grass grows the best in the shade? I planted grass along my driveway and some sections are very shaded. I planted contractors mix to get some grass up and growing put the shaded sections are getting thinner and thinner. Is fescue best? Rye? Which one? Thanks.

It gets a couple hours a day thats all. Will fescue survive with only a couple hours? Any other types of grass to try? Thanks.

Creeping red fescue is the best grass for shade in the northern 1/2 of the US. Rough bluegrass will grow in moist shade but does not tolerate drought.

Use a quality seed blend labeled for shade (such as Scotts Shady). Be sure to keep the seedbed and newly germinated seed moist until it has been mowed a few times. Shaded turf should be mowed at about 3" or taller.
