Naturals should not smell?

We visited with an organic fertilizer company at the Iowa State Fair Saturday. He told us that 'natural organic fertilizers' should not have an "odor". Is this right??? (We told him we tried some, but they smelled bad, and that's why we have shunned away from them so far) He also told us that 'organically-grown' corn, soybeans, etc, bring a premium price (which they do).

1) organic soy and corn in the commodity's market??? say that part again slowly, I must be dense, but give it a go and I will see if I can get it.

2) AND THIS IS REAL IMPORTANT, IF IT SMELLS LIKE $H*T IT IS MOST LIKELY BAD!!!!!!! a strong earth smell at first maybe but NEVER have a bad smell!!!

3) organics is the fastest growing segment of the green industry's!!!!

If the conditions are not ideal for composing it will smell bad. Proper carbon to nitrogen ratio and aeration are some requirements to promote the process. The bad odor is from an anaerobic condition.

cuda, care to elaborate on the smell, like hydrogen sulfide or ammonia? this will be an interesting turn for this thread,Ruminal microorganisms,sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, this should spice it up a little!!

Well, if it smells bad what was in the fertilizer? If fish was an ingredient it will have an odor. It's such a general question it's hard to give a concrete answer.

As far as organic corn and soybeans, with GMO's you probably won't get true organic of either anymore.

Treegal, the best description I can give is after cutting a lawn (high nitrogen fed), not bagged, blades damp you have accumulated a mass of grass adhered to the underside of the deck. Later,no growth due to any irrigation/rain. The grass starts to decompose under the deck. You scrape the deck later. This is the odor I am referring to (Ammonia, NH3).

cuda, dont let that N get away!!! store it in some high C compost and then use the compost later! that's an anaerobe so maybe add some worm casts to get the good herd into your compost.

My guys said it smelled like a dead mouse. Not sure what's up with that, but when we opened the bag, it stank up our entire office. I'm doing some more checking cuz I haven't given up on "natural" organics yet.

Treegal, my compost pile is an “equal opportunity employer”, the more the merrier. I mix paper egg cartons (shredded) when carbon is limited. Carbon byproducts seems limited from other threads, what are the consensus in using newspapers (soy based) as a substitute or paper bags?

Um, spray the underside of your deck w/some Fluid Film.

Thanks Natty -- the natural organic fert company involved regarding "naturally-grown" corn & soybeans at the Iowa State Fair was Pearl Valley Organix out of Pearl City, ILL. (Aerobically composted chicken manure, (ACCM), U-MAXX, U-FLEX, sulfate of potash). It was a 16-2-16 analysis. They say their fert does not smell??

Right now, I'm searching for the "best deal", and I'm not sure which way to turn. Some say their 16% N is better, while others recommend a 46-0-0. I know I'll make a mistake somehow.....right now I just don't know which mistake I will pick, cuz there are so many choices to pick from. :confused:

Chicken manure fert smells bad, not sh#t bad ,but a unique and strange odor. The one I use is 60% OM, and the smell is gone by the next day.
