Brad,
On your HRX217's, i saw a few threads back that you were putting new gears and wheels in. Was there something wrong with the old ones? Only reason i ask is I'm probably going to be picking up a HRX this week and I'm just doing my research before i buy. Thanks.

I love the HRX217s best 21" IMO they are great baggers and do great on hills I have alot of hours on both of mine. The gears sometimes were out Only one was real bad out of all 4 on the 2 mowers but I replaced all 4 gears and 4 new back tires. I had replaced one gear 2 years ago. They other weak point is the hydro control cable and they are a bit complicated to replace but one guy on here has a good write up. I think I replaced 3 out of the 2 mowers over the last 6-7 years. I did one and had a dealer do 2. havent done one in a while so hopefully they keep holding up. Otherwise they are great mowers and can take a beating thats for sure

Brad, Where did you get the tow mirrors for the Dmax. I asked the dealer about them and he said they cost about $900. I havent really looked around online yet but I really need a set for my GMC. The small stock ones drive me crazy when im towing.

Hey brad, Really old question, but i am looking to do dual yellow top optima batteries and am wondering if you upgraded you alternator, and if you used any solenoid? I feel like i could just run it direct without a flux capacitor or solenoid or isolator. Thanks and from one dmax owner to another...Nice Truck!!!

I had the duralasts in my half ton and never had a problem but still think optima is better. I have red tops and unless you have a diesel redtops will be fine. I do upgrade alternators didnt on the dump because it has a bigger one but I probably will someday as preventitive maintenance. I wired them together and fused the postive on the dump i actually used a more of a breaker switch rather that a big fuse.To get the most out of them you should also ground to the frame and run another wire from the alternator but I normally don't do that.

mind telling me what your breaker switch method is? is there one in particular that you like?

Also thanks for quick response and the great detail! Since i have a Duramax i might go with the yellow tops because i dont think the reds are enough.

Go yellows thats what I will be doing but it you have a dmax everything should be setup for duals already just replace the batterys.
The breaker switch is this neat little setup that came with the dump probably for what every they had on the chassis. Not sure where you get it if it didn;t have that I would have just used a big maxi fuse there just like the one I used on the wire going into the cab feeding my soderless fuse panel in there.

Ok thanks. It looks like all of the ones they offer for 2011 models have the built it signals. I need power heated mirrors without the signals. I will have to order ones for a different model. I am pretty sure that the mounts are all the same, I am just not sure about the wiring. I will ask the company before i order.

Ok not too sure on the differences I know the nbs 07.5-10 or up is different than early because I did them on my 03 and 08.
The obs 03 was so much easier 3 bolts done in 2 minutes the 08 took me alot long its harder to get the bolts in and out and the wire is ran all the way down the door to below the window and lock buttons so I had to take a part half the door panel on both sides but it was well worth it those little mirrors look so ugly I don;t know why they even put the on these big trucks

Yeah I dont know why they even offer them either. They are ok for the 1500 but too small for anything bigger. I tried to find one with tow mirrors when I bought mine but all of the SLE models the dealer could find had the small ones.

Thanks for the help. I am going to look into it a bit more and figure out which ones will work. Definitely gonna upgrade them though.

Yeah I always change them I look for them when buying a new truck but its not a big factor as I can change them easily I am more particular on color and the condition of the truck mechanically and physically.

used it today it works good, only 2 things I don't like are the way the handle mounts is just set screws and when the tarp is open and tied down you can't crank it really tight the way the gear thing works you can just snug it up sometimes I like it a bit tighter but the wind didn't blow the sides up and down really so I guess thats not a big issue

Northern tool. I paid like 300 its only 24" wide not 48 but it holds all the stuff i need and was $300 or so. Stainless steel door. They make one all stainless and one all black steel with multiple sizes for each.

I decided on this because I am mainly doing it for more weight and it was the least expensive option plus if I feel the need I can take it out or put it back in

because they won't fit the other way with the tarp unless I put them over the front lip I believe I will try the other way but I dont think they fit and the handles stick out the same as the mirror so its ok but yeah most guys mount them the other way

don;t have the room it takes me longer to load with my machine than the yard and I pay the same price either way. If I have extra from a job I save it up for another stockpile would be nice when you need a little more but I just don't have the room for a large one right now

5 but I can get six into it if I get a good skid driver who packs it in really tight. The dump truck can hold 6-8 or so

YES! And boy what a pain, its been a 2 month long process for me! My site is done which is hurting business right now because I get alot from it. I will stay with Microsoft but Melbourne IT the actual host company kinda made me me I ended up having to pay another 155 to them My new site is built and such but the transition is not complete should be done soon. I'm sure you've been asked before (I'm not exactly sure where to start looking in the 282 pages of this thread) but how do you like your bob-cat tractor? Do you wish you went bigger or smaller? Is the loader able to dump into your dump truck or even lift high enough to clear the dump truck sides? Anything you wish you could change about it?

As I'm looking to purchase some property this year (about 5 acres hopefully), I am also looking at compact tractors to help maintain the property and maybe use it to expand into more landscape jobs. I've been looking at the 2000 series from John Deere, will probably be a 2520 when I finally am able to purchase. I want to be able to haul it easiy and use it on lawns with little to no turf damage, so I don't want to go too big but yet still want to tractor to be useful and not too small.

Hey Brad,

I think you have done great job in building your enterprise. The mowing and landscaping maintenance you are doing great at. I do think it may be worth while you taking some classes pertaining to the precast concrete and hardscaping world. You will learn what stone material to put behind a wall, what type of drainage, what type of geo-grid, what base should be under paving stones. It is very important to do something correctly and deliver these messages to your customers so they aren't just content with a wall having to be rebuilt every 5 years.

I love it, I dont use it a ton but was definetly something I needed-it does lift high enough to get over the boards but barely. There are times I wish i had a skid and times I much rather have this than a skid. I like it because I got a new machine with warranty at a good price. I hope to have a skid one day too. I will keep this for a few years at least. I would love to start brushhogging with it but I just stay so busy with other work too. I wish I did have higher lift and a bit more horse power-it loads salt great but I cant put a vbox in the dump or anything bigger than the vbox in my pickup as it barely makes it.

Thanks I really don't think I want to get into hardscaping too much. I just do a few little jobs here and there. If I have time I would take classes but I never seem to have any time and I rather focus my time on other aspects of the business I am better and more efficient at. That might all change time will tell...

Few more- first ones from in march topdressing a front lawn(guy had a little golf hole setup at his house!), then some recent stripes.

And the last one is a picture of the dump-should be a lesson for all dump truck owners, I swore when I brought mine I would never do that but sure enough I did-left the tailgate down too much when dumping!

Great Setup with all your Trucks and equipment everything is looking really good...Not sure if you mentioned it earlier but what tires are you running on the Chevy dump and are you happy with them? I have an 04 Duramax and have to replace all the tires but am lost on what to get...

Thanks, Good question I got new front ones and they are goodyear with an agressive highway type tread I forget the names. The backs are what came on it very agressives goodyears. They are all like 215/85s 16s I think. I will need at least new backs before winter if not sooner but I would really like to match all the front and backs with a semi agressive heavy duty tire but not sure what I want...

Looking good man. How's the employees working out?

doing ok one that I had last year is decent shows up and knows what he is doing for the most part, hes not the best but hes worth keeping for know the new guy is so so he shows up and wants to work but doesnt always learn from his mistakes. I have another guys starting in a week and will keep those 2 part time I think
I must say finding the right employees, keeping them happy, showing up, training the to my standards and setting it all up to pay them legally etc is probably one of if not the hardest aspects I have encountered in my business

ya stander x is great, actually had it in the shop for a little warranty work and man is it way better than before! the controls on it are so smooth now feels like your floating! It can go up almost anything side to side is iffy on steep hills and down you just have to make sure you have enough stopping distance-if you dont you have to go down the hill backwards

here is a picture this is the maximum it can hold side to side and even once in a while it looses it off this hill. It would climb this fine going down you would need about 15ft to stop. this one is always mowed side to side because it would scalp the steep top

yeah I'm still getting jobs but just booking them for later in the month because we HAVE to get all this maintenance done! I think the economy is picking back up a little so people are more willing to spend some money on the landscaping. Thanks not quite yet but theres always the chance Id like another truck possibly depending on snow contracts and I would love some property but thats all to come in the future.

Looks good man, I know what you mean about school. School takes up 3 days a week in march, april, and some of may. It also takes up some of august, september, october, and part of november. With me playing hockey forget snow plowing or salting. I could probably double or tripple what I make if I didnt have to go to college. In all honesty though I dont mind school, I got 3 years left however im 22 right now so ill be a late bloomer.:hammerhead: Hope the season has gone well for you!
Yeah I always worked so much during school it was unreal even with plowing. I went 5 days a week for a few hrs a day. School was not my thing I passed fine but just didnt enjoy it and probably will never use it

Actually funny you say that because thats what I did wnet used the dump to yank it out and the whole thing stayed in one solid piece as you can see even after banging dirt there was no way to lift in into the truck the tractor even had trouble lifting it! thing was heavy!

Hey guys! I been slacking- lots going on here mostly all good though! Business has been steady all summer and for the first time in my whole life I wont be going back to school in the next week or so since I am done with college so that's a great feeling!

Anyways we still been doing alot of jobs just haven't taken too many pictures. Here,s a bigger job that took alot of planning, I subbed half of it out to an excavator I know he did the digging some of the gravel and the concrete

Basically we created 2 off street parking areas for a house in a tight neighborhood.

Thanks Greg! Yeah I probably wont need one I do not do that many leaves I usually just do all my regular accounts and will be lucky to fill the truck by just bagging them once a day. I will have a few jobs that I will fill the truck on but if I had a leaf loader I bet I would only fill the truck 4 times a year or so-just really not worth it to me right now.

how does the milage fair on the dump? i am looking into purchasing one, but dont really need a disel, just hualing mulch, stone every once in a while, probably wont put more than 6k miles a year on it.

also, what type of milage you see when plowing? i have the same setup minus the dualy and dump. 07 3500 vtech. but in two years of having a plow and spreader and have gotten no snow or ice!

Just looking for input!

yep! He came down to 450 probably would have came lower but I wanted to be fair the thing looks nike it was never used-even smelt new when he fired it up. REal nice guy and I could tell he kept his stuff maintained he showed me his cub cadet zero turn he brought and it was mint!

Rough guess I would say 100 per year on each. It was probably higher back when they were all I used one is 6 and the other 7 years old I believe so I would say both are over 1000hrs

I put an addition on my 25x25 shop that is about 20x30, the doors are on the 20' side and my truck wont fit it there, literally 1 foot short. Great work man! I read threw the whole thread over the past week, and nice work, and sharp trucks and equipment! We are both the same age and i love to see guys like us who work hard and have great success! And i had a question about your dump truck, how does it do when you load it around 5 tons, does it grunt to lift it at all? I had an electric over hydro on my f-superduty and the muncie pump ran off the fan belt and after changing clutch packs every year (because they would wear out every five dumps lol) it wouldnt pick up 2 tons, but mine has a 5 speed tranny so i put a pto pump on it and it will lift way more than you can put on the truck with ease 6+ tons (i only haul 5 or so on it) but i understand yours is electric and i was just wondering how it does, my ez dump is electric but doesnt have the pump i seen on yours in your pics (mine will do like 2 ton its on a 3/4 ton pickup) sorry for the long post, but once again nice work man!

Most I ever put in it was like 4.5 ton and thats way over capacity. Truck holds it fine and dumps it fine never struggled at all but when I have that big of a load the truck itself driving has alot of trouble. We have alot of hilly terrain here and the truck struggles going up hills loaded.

I know whats hard to find these days is a 4x4 5speed one ton pto dump, ive been searching for a while and you can always find the older late 80's chevys, but it seems no one uses the pto dumps in newer trucks as much, ive found a bunch of 2wd but not any 4x4 close to me any way, i was at the gie expo looking at the chevy booth, checking out a brand new 3500 (and drooling lol) and i had heard that the automatic alison tranny has a place on the side of it for a pto, and i asked the sales rep about it, and the guy looks at me and says "Pto ? what are you talking about" 3 reps later this older gentleman said that they do but something about all of them will have the plate but something about the vin # has to have a certain # or it wont actually have the plate hook up, but he said they work well winches etc. but he didn't know about a dump body? You ever have any experience with that? Or know someone who has tht set up?

You don't have a picture of the plug in on your spreaders do you? I got myself a spreader but it has no plugs on it, so I'm looking to wire up some sort of plug on it, but not sure what I wanna go with. Or wire size.

Dear god lol. Just spent the past 5 days going through your thread. Not skipping a single page.

You are definitely a good example for new guys trying to get into the industry. Looking at your work has taught me a thing or two and watching your fleet grow has given me a better idea on what I want to get two. Going the route of getting a dump trailer then the dump is definitely the way I plan to go now.

depending how many wires you need, get some 7-way trailer wire and plug ends. I wired my rear plow up that way and then used quick connect plugs like these for the power/ground cables. Similar setup might work for you.

The 7-way trailer wire was like $2.60/foot and the connectors were a couple bucks, I priced it out and it was well under half the cost of getting an OEM truck side harness. Again, thats for a rear plow, pretty simple up and down but you might be able to rig something up I don't know much about salters.

Hey sorry Austin, a trailer plug would probably work best I am not a huge fan of the buyers connections

Wow I just went through this whole thread and I feel like I just ran a marathon. Anyways, its great to see where your business has gone in the past few years. I'm 20 right now and started out small last year very similar to you and hope to at some point get to where you are. Have a good rest of the winter, hoping for snow.

Thanks! I really enjoy that people go through the thread and hope they take something useful from it. I am by no means close to perfect just taking things as they go. I try to keep it updated as much as possible I slacked off a bit in 2012 tho!

Use a backblade to smooth the drive or just float your bucket to fill in the holes?

No I don't have a back blade for the machine just used the bucket float mode and then the weight of the machine to pack it down real nice

seems like you do a fair amount of stone work. I dont see why stone driveways are so popular there. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen with the hills and snow and ice.

I literally REFUSE! to plow gravel driveways. It's a nightmare people around here opt for them time to time and it's just chaos. IMO its people cheeping out over and over instead of just paying to have something done right once. Not that I'm routing for Bosseti to lose any work.

Ya every so often people want them around here-cheaper option than concrete or asphault. Pavers are not real big here and there is alot of conrete but most concrete guys are expensive.

Ya I dont plow them either. I do one flat gravel driveway and 2 very small lots and hate them. But its what the customer wants!

The first year I had a plow one of my first clients was gravel and omg did I get chewed out first I got called that I didnt plow the snow low enough and then i came back and I pushed too much gravel. Thats when I decided I was just done plowing gravel. People are to difficult to please and I have way to many houses to plow in a night to sit there coming up with some algorithm to fit their gravel drives lol ... Id consider a lot if I have a loader with a snow blower attachment or if a contract stating gravel WILL BE PUSHED was signed lol
