Its popular around here, actually the red lava rock is even more popular. He had red out in the front bed but wanted white here:confused:

I like the gravel over mulch because you don't have to replace it every year, it's easier to blow grass clippings out of, and it's easier to blow leaves out of.

Yes, but you can make more replace mulch each year. Its a pain to clean up hedge clippings out of stone though compared to mulch

No, That was from the home owner who put the little fence back in. He was out there the whole time literaly followed me around for 3hrs. He took care of them-he also swept the walks so I cant complain to much

Yeah, I'm not in any big hurry...

But I can get a 52" Freedom Z for less than I can a 48" Stander RH. And I can get a decent bagging system for the Z as compared to just he grass gobbler on the RH.

Every piece of equipment has trade offs, I'm still trying to figure out what I want and what I can afford...

I don't know anything about those, but a decent amount of z's will be less than a wright. They each have their place. But where you are a z might suit your purposes better

Since when? Once its in the mulch its very hard to clean up. Stone doesn't move when you clean it out with the blower. I would rather clean up clippings out of the rocks then mulch.

Not for me Mulch here sorta compacts together making it easy to blow/rake hedge clippings. Stone every little piece of clipping goes down in and I dunno about you but my blow will blow stone everywhere

As a solo operator with with a low number of weekly accounts, it shouldn't be an issue. The 52" did not seem underpowered at the dealer.

I take exceptional care of my equipment. Running an entry level commercial machine as an entry level solo operator should be within the machine's parameters.

Well, I take better care of my equipment than that. I don't have employees beating it up. As far as it being ugly, that's a subjective opinion. And I'd rather have a Z than a hydro WB that costs just as much, or more. And the Freedom Z is excellent on hills because it sits so low.

Use it for plowing and aerating sometimes. Its not really that much I paid 3200 for the last one. To put it in nnj18 persepective I could sell it for $4500 easily. It was a good deal, yeah I got the money (ie I save do keep buying/selling mowers:laugh:) but I want another truck so that hurt that a bit but I love atv riding.

Its still a F'n half ton, chevy dodge or ford doenst matter, And ive seen more chevys take a nose dive with a plow than any other truck. Andy, idk if you're joking or not with that comment though. Wanna handle real weight get a 3/4 ton or bigger if you plan on making this a career. You can only do so much with a 1/2 ton before its gonna fall apart and leave you screwed. Hey if half tons work, why spend the extra money when it's working. I think Brad said a while ago, I think next year he said he will be looking for a 3/4 ton truck next year, if I remember right. But a 3/4 ton would be nice if I was using a truck every single day, but for me having to drive to school 34 miles there and 34 miles back, It's bad enough I go threw $45/week just for gas to get to school and thats now making any money. There is no way a 3/4 ton would make it any better, and my plow works with my half ton, Brad has a good set up. But I'm saving for a 3/4 ton diesel.
And I did say it Jokingly, but still I don't think the truck would have squatted that much though.

If you don't treat a 1/2 ton like it's 3/4, then a 1/2 will be fine. When I worked for a feed/farm store and operated fork trucks, I loaded 1/2 tons with 1 ton or better of wood pellets, lime, fertilizer, etc. I didn't like it because I didn't want to be responsible, but as soon as my forks left the pallet, it wasn't my problem anymore. As long as I didn't destroy the truck loading the pallet, all responsibility went onto the stupid driver. Point being, Brad's not an idiot.

Oh for just mowing its fine, its the other aspects of this industry that I feel having anything less than a 3/4 ton can be boarderline dangerous. theres a few around me towing deckover trailers loaded with either a skid, or a WAM mower and the tailpipe nearly rubbing the roads cuz its sagging so bad. Saw a guy yesterday with a pintle on a lincoln navigator, kinda makes ya wonder.

Why? Its not like he's trimming limbs over a 4 lane highway. Hell some of you guys on here have more lights then city trucks, anything over strobes in the flashers is overkill.

four ways and slimlighter in back window I was there for a while and the rotator would kill my battery

Thanks, its an awesome more leaves a beautiful cut and cuts time in half compared to my 36 wb. only complaint is the smaller tires on the rh model it tends to tear turf easily

Yes I am not trimming big limbs or on a main road, but lights are friggin awesome I am in the process of adding a few more and swapping the rotator out for an led

Yeah, I'll place a few bucks on that also. I got some strange looks last year when I was blowing snow with the leaves.

I actually don't mind wet leaves or a small amount of snow because it makes the leaves heavier and less likely to blow around with the swirling wind we have here.

naw I will probably get another led for this one they just look so much better than that big rotator. No they are not the best looking but new rims are not really on my list right now. way to much other important stuff, maybe down the road if I find a good deal though

I got a whelen responder Linear led on the blue truck a little while back. I have been in the process of adding some new lights on the blue truck just haven't finished and put pictures up yet.

I bought a flasher off craigslist today, it's a whelen DX something I think flasher, dual rotator, with a 4 sideagon mirror in the middle, I got it for $40, the only thing wrong with it is that it needs a new bulb on one side, but thats no big deal

Nice truck, almost the same as the one I just bought, just a little newer and less miles. You'll love it, except for gas mileage. I have a long list of things I want to do to mine also. Any plans for a bigger trailer??

I do like the rotators because of the mirrors and it makes it brighter, but I'm all for using better technology and I have looked into getting the same flasher as you, but I can't spend that kind of money right now.

Its about time you got a 2500! lol Truck looks nice but a few words of advice. Buy a drop hitch for your trailer. Also, look into selling that blue truck in the future. It WILL cost you in a few years. I used the hell out of my 1500 when i first started out like you did, and am now paying for it. I pretty much replaced everything except the engine in it. Just trying to save you the hastle i had. The 6.0 is a great engine but a PIG on gas. Dont expect what you got in the blue truck to get in the white one lol You're looking at 9mpg tops lol

Throw 33s, flowmasters and a heavy foot on a 6.0 and you'll see even worse gas mileage.

The exhaust should open it up enough to make a negligible positive difference, however, the 33's are what killed it. And my 5.7 isn't any better, believe me.

What do you have the 5.7 in? Mine's a '95 K2500 extended cab/long bed with the 4.10:1 gears.

AndyTblc
11-12-2009, 07:34 PM
My 5.7 gets 16.4mpg on the highway going down to school and back. Then if I pull the pop up camper it goes down to 14, then pulling my camper down the highway it drops to about 9mpg

93Chevy
11-12-2009, 07:46 PM
Nice thing about the 4.10's is that the mgp is pretty constant, albeit poor. But it's a truck, so I'm not complaining.

Oh okay. The old pre-'96 TBI engines weren't as good on gas as the EFI engines which started in '96. You probably also have 3.73 gears which are better on gas until you have a load. The 4.10's will keep me right about 10-11 unless I have a couple ton of rocks or trees on my trailer.

Thanks! lol. Yeah I gotta go get 2 hitches to keep in this truck there is a 2 inch drop on there now but thats the hitch I use for my blue truck. Yeah the blue truck will stay around for a little while-way better on gas so its nice to use sometimes plus it wont get beat on as much now. I dunno it was my firt truck so it would be tough to get rid of but I will see what happens down the road.

As for gas mileage yeah it sucks. But its a work truck. If I just have to do runnign around I will use the blue truck. I think with this past week- had a trailer on about 50% of the time-it seemed to be getting 8-9mpg. gotta fill her up at the end of tommorrow

I would keep the half ton if I were you. Its just fine for pulling your mowers around and you can use the 3/4 for the bigger jobs that require hevier loads. I bet that half ton is rated to tow 4500-5000 pounds. Your mowing setup does not weigh that much, so your not beating on it. Plowing with it maybe, just take it easy. I like that blue color. You could also use the half ton as a strict personal truck and a backup truck. That way you drive the half to school and come home and the 3/4 is already loaded and ready to go. Even though loading only takes ten minutes, it sucks to do it everyday, it gets old.

Same here. I can buy anything I want, but the only thing holding me back is room. I would like to keep my truck and add a 10-15 year old dump truck but I don't have room. Im looking for a shop also. its bigger than a dump insert??? so a dump insert would be a waste??? I bought it when I only had a half ton thats why I wanted a smaller one. It does great for what I need it for and at least I have a dumper... better than hand unloading or or paying someone $600 to have them haul away leaves with a triaxle... you should throw some higher sides up on that dump. I rent one occassionally that has the sides directly from maxi-dump they are great. The trailer I rent is like a 5x8x5 I think. I would at least consider it for leaves since they have no weight really. You could easily probably double the amount of leaves in there right now. Just a thought. Looks good though.

You should have made a pile in the street and mowed it over. Your trailer would only be 1/4 full. If you dump for free then forget it. I figured i can fit 2 weeks worth of leaves in my big dump trailer by doing that.

Thats not my client, it was just a one maybe 2 time fall cleanup. If it was the grass wouldnt have been so high and it would have been edged alot better. I tried talking them into so other work but I doubt it...

Almost all the leaves in there were mulched by the honda and stander so they are pretty chopped up and packed it there-even if I did dump free though I still rather chop them up as much as possible= less travel time and less gas

I dont really want sides on my truck, I really dont want to make the trailer higher either because it would be more of a pain to dump barrels and baggers over the sides then.

Yeah, that's a good point. It does get to be a pain to have to climb over the tailgate to dump barrels or tarps. Hopefully I'll get my hands on a dump trailer in a couple years. That would sure be nice. Then I can put as much wood on it as I wanted.
