Vortec 4.2L I-6 Engine

Standard in TrailBlazer LT models, the Vortec 4.2L I-6 engine generates 285 hp — unsurpassed in its class(1) — at 6000 rpm and 276 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm.

Some important features of the Vortec 4.2L I-6 engine:

A broad torque curve through the majority of the speed range helps this engine deliver 90 percent of peak torque from 2000 to 6000 rpm. This provides ample torque at low rpm and high rpm, giving you an SUV that responds with the torque you need, when you need it.
Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) relays accelerator pedal position information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM then positions the throttle air valve in the best position to help achieve optimum vehicle drivability.
Pistons and rods are lightweight, helping this engine run comfortably at high rpm and producing more power from smaller displacements.
Variable Valve Timing offers a number of advantages over conventional valve timing in the areas of power, efficiency and emissions and helps produce near-peak levels of torque over an extended range.
An advanced heat treatment process give the aluminum engine block and cylinder heads light weight with exceptional strength.
Nodular iron crankshafts were optimized using the most advanced math-based computer tools available to GM to help provide quiet operation, long-term reliability and remarkable durability.
Iridium-tip spark plugs help this engine travel up to 100,000 miles before the plugs need to be replaced. The recommended engine coolant change interval is up to 5 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. And the accessory drive belt is designed to operate up to 150,000 miles before requiring replacement. Maintenance needs vary with different uses and driving conditions. I got all the info from chevy.com what i wonder why dont they offer the4.2I6
in the trucks but im wondering if becuase the V6 is making its power at the low end. I myslef Im thinking about a trailblazer someday and that I6 has just caught my eye thinking about the older I-6s. Ive talked to mechanics about chevys I-5 they its a very good motor too.
I hope chevy keeps making the Inline engines unlike *ford cough*

wow THATS a lot of info. ya if u look at the power curves the 4.3 is makking the power in the low end. and the 4.2 is obvoulsly making it way high for a 6 at least. basically it woould make the truck powerrless while pulling a trailer unless geared right..

That's nice but I don't want some funny-sounding SUV thing,
I want a damn three quarter ton pick up truck! :p

But I've been saying it for years, why they can't stick that exact V-6 in our three quarter tonners?
If geared properly they would run just as strong, pull at least as good, might suffer a little bit
on the top end (like at speeds over 65-70 mph which we don't need).

Trying to get that concept through to Detroit is another story.

you would have to put like a 6 speed stick in your truck to even make it move topsites. and you would need a granny gear to get it rollin with a trailer haha...

hmm might get alittle more if they go to 4.10 lol but wouldnt be great for Fuel economy

my ears perk when i hear one of the newer trailblazers with the Inline six.

the interesting thing about the kenworth W-900L I took my cdl test in.
It had a cummins with a 13speed not sure which one but I only used 8 gears out of 13 to get up to 55mph running about 1500rpms at 55mph
pulling a 48ft trailer empty of course. If dodge would offer somthing like this i would be first in line waiting for a dodge ram with 5.9 cummins with a 13 speed trans at least 4.10 gears in the rear.
always felt the ford f350 7.3 i had could used one more gear or two just to run some lower rpms.t
Edit: throw in some air brakes on the truck and trailer too lol

air brakes...HA we don't need no air brakes or do we?? hmmmm... the possibilities are endless... ya my dads road construction company he owns has a 96 mack ch 613 with a 429 12 speed eaton tranny. it is a great setup. I was thinkin about using it to pull my 6x14 trailer ... that would be fun.

I owned a 2003 Trailblazer EXT with the inline 6, and I also owned a few GM vehicles with the 4.3 V-6. The inline 6 felt stronger and was far smoother and more refined sounding. I too am puzzled that GM doesn't offer the 6 in any of their pick ups. Not even the colorado which just got a v-8 engine option for 2009

We have an 05 Trailblazer EXT with the 4.2 and I have a 00 S10 with the 4.3. Trailblazer definitely has more umph but I've never tried towing anything with it. I have pulled my 6x10 trailer before with the Warrior on it with the S10. It's a stout little truck, but I wouldn't want to use it everyday for that!
