This weekend we started to tear down my 1985 gmc 3500. We are painting it "medium green" which is the same color as my 05 2500. All the body panels are new replacement except for the cab that we bought allready restored. More pics to come.

I hope youre going to put a Duramax in there otherwise, its just not worth it...

Good fuel economy with the 6.2 and transmissions are cheap to replace.
I'd like to replace the 350 in ours with a 6.2 or 6.5.

It will be a nice truck when done. I personally don't like the gvwr on the 80's chevy trucks though.

I like the hydrolic valve for the plow too.

The way I look at it is that they had to haul around the same equipment we do in 1985 so this truck can do it....just kind of slow

wow that is goin to be a nice truck once you get it done... have you ever thought about repowering it with like a cummins or a duramax? that would be awesome if you did!!!!

Wow that truck brings back memories! I had the same truck but a two wheel drive. Same color, too. It was a great truck for me, I used it for 4 years and sold it, believe it or not it is still on the road, I see it from time to time. Cool project, keep us posted!

cant wait to see the truck when it is finished. I have a 1989 chevy 3500 1 ton dump awsome truck, runs great, but needs new cab corners rocker panels some welding in the bed and a paint job. seeing your pics reminds me of the work it needs:dizzy:

When its all over the total cost including the truck will be about 3000-3500 including the cost of the truck. The main reason Im keeping this truck is because my 05 cost 2200 a year to insure and this one is 600. This truck is decent on gas if you baby it believe it or not.

Thats shocking!! because the older the truck the less safe it is. at least that's what my insurance agent tells me..

Otherwise, it looks like a tank thats coming from a Ford guy ...

More pics from today...We wire wheeled the frame, primed, and painted it. One of the cab mount holes was rusted to we cut it and I attemped to weld it...and finally got the new cab on.

We painted the bottom of the new cab so hopefully it doesnt rust for a while.

I plan to do this similar project as long as I am able to drive. My next truck will be a late 1970's F-100 that I plan to overhaul and paint.
Hurry up with the pictures!!!! This is going to be one sweat truck!

The new cab was out of a 2wd truck so had to cut the hump out of the old cab and rivit it onto the new one.

Thats one hell of a job you have going. Good looking rig. I wish I could do that to an older chevy. When those fenders going on? How many miles on that? Does the bed dump? Are you going to build some custom metal sides, to hold the leaves and debris? I would build some cool sides for that flatbed.
You probly can get 5000 for the truck when your done.. great job man....

Fenders are on now I just have to get new pics. The truck has 80k, I bought it off the orginal owner. I have wooden sides for it, I have been using it for about 2 years.

Trying to get it finished before fall lol because the leaf box goes on. The two "ropes" are the pull strings for the lights. It will be painted Medium green i think its called. Its the factory color of my 05 2500hd. Those amber stobes are comming off and i want to get oval strobes for up there and a hideaway kit also. In my expierance stobe lights are just for show because nobody moves out of my way when I am plowing lol.

How do you guys think it would look with a "gunmetal" colored bed instead of the black.

I agree with Dura To The Max. It looked pretty good in that one outside pic. Will you be redoing upholstery and everything like that?

Gmgbo
10-15-2008, 09:40 PM
I will get outside pics up soon. The inside is painted to match the outside, I got a new rubber floor cover and dash cover. I dont want to go too crazy inside because it will probably get ruined faster than the outside lol.
