The Arizona Republic
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies raided a Mesa landscaping company early Wednesday, arresting nearly three dozen people suspected of being in the country illegally.

The raid at the offices of Artistic Land Management, on Main Street just west of Dobson Road, began about 4:30 a.m., according to one worker who was handcuffed but later released after producing documentation that he was in the country legally.

“What Sheriff Joe is doing is an abuse of power,” Luis Juarez, the employee who was detained, said through a translator.

Jose Hernandez, 35, of Chandler, listed in Corporation Commission records as the company's owner, could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Among those arrested are suspects in criminal fraud cases and others with warrants, according to Capt. Paul Chagolla, an MCSO spokesman.

Juarez said workers were handcuffed with plastic zip-ties while deputies checked for documents. Those who could provide proof they were in the country legally were released, while others were put on buses and taken away, he said.

Rolando Garza, a driver and laborer for the company, said he was detained when he showed up for work at 5 a.m.

“They zip-tied everyone, even me,” Garza said. “And I'm a citizen here.” He said he was released at 7 a.m.

The search warrants served on the business are related to an investigation in to potential violations of Arizona's employer's sanctions law, according to MCSO.

In June, MCSO arrested nine suspected illegal immigrants at water parks in Mesa and north Phoenix and said the bust might lead to an employer sanctions case. So far it has not.

Artistic Land Management is tucked off Main Street in a stretch of west Mesa where used-car lots, mobile home communities and motels share the road with the soon-to-open light rail line. On Wednesday, an estimated 50 trucks, some loaded with landscaping gear, sat idle in a fenced-off area flooded by recent rains.

Cibola Mobile Home Park is next to the landscaping company. Steve Wahl, who manages the park, estimated that 30 percent of the tenants in the park work for Artistic Land Management.

“It kind of sucks that Sheriff Joe is trying to do this,” Wahl said. “It hurts everybody. I don't like illegal immigration but there are better ways to deal with the issue.”

Barry Christensen, who said he has lived at Cibola for seven years, said the majority of his neighbors are Hispanic immigrants.

“These are good, honest people who work hard,” Christensen said. He blamed the raid on election-year politics.

“It's just publicity,” he said.

MCSO plans a 3:30 p.m. press conference in downtown Phoenix with Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas to provide more details about the raid.

You reap what you sow. Can you say subcontract :laugh::laugh: He better do something quick.

Good Honest people? Illegal Immigrants, Just because you can work hard does not give anyone the right to be in this country illegaly. Hispanics rational is that if they make it across the border illegally, then their "hard working" job steeling work ethic will "make up" for this BS. Send them all back every single one without citizenship, and close the company down that was hireing them

Yeah, and before someone brings up the "But they do the jobs no one else like to do" let me remind you that there are plenty of people living in America that would like to work in construction!

Even better is when people say "But who's going to mow our grass?"

Mabye thats the problem, minumum wage and no benefits. There are plenty of jobs to fill because even the illegals won't work for that.

Around here an illegal immigrent doing general labor work gets $12+ per hour. (Still no benefits of course) Someone that is experienced gets lots more.

I find it interesting that in the State of Delaware, there are abount 12,000 unemployed individuals, and unemployed individual being described as someone activley looking for work.

There are also an estimated 12,000 illegal immigrents living in our state. I realize that some of the unemployed people are working the system, but not nearly as many as you think.

oh so those americans only want those jobs if they pay $30 an hr like GM used to before they went broke. is that what youre saying?

companies around here im sure wish they could pay that much... but the american consumer has come to expect everything should get cheaper every year just cause it does at walmart. not to mention the over ubundance of cops, firefighters, and other americans jumping into the biz illegally for some weekend beer cash. they dont pay the same overhead we do so they can charge less thus giving the consumers the idea thats all anyone should charge. how are we supposed to pay american employees $30/hr if american consumers only want to pay $20 a yard.

americas greediness is going to be its downfall in the global economy.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see the tide has turned on this site. I am active on the political side trying to get people elected that want America to be what it once was. I posted a thread that was taken down because it was critical of the Spanish speaking site new to this owners forum. I don't blame them for protecting their business but I wouldn't help any business that advanced the illegal immigration by offering jobs or supporting their criminal act of violating our immigration laws.
A decade ago on this site I was speaking to a deaf crowd about how illegals will cost America in the future. "There great workers" "their not drunks or druggies". fast forward to today and there are people asking my son for a job all the time. States are finding out just how much illegals cost them in social services and school costs. Many are now facing bankruptcy! I now many trades business' that are struggling do to competition from illegal labor. The one's that survive lay off their workers and then hire them back under the table to compete!???? No benefits though. We need the climate in this state to change with someone like Joe. We have Pat McDonough in Baltimore county but we need a Governor who backs him up.
If the political will in my state of Maryland could turn my son would have a future in this business. He could hire real Americans and use the year round pay system I devised for him. He is solo as there is just too many companies running illegals to compete for commercial work around here. Residential older customers still respect the laws of this country and are his best customer. However, I think you need commercial contracts as part of your mix to survive in drought times like we are experiencing now. We need the people of this country to believe that being a US citizen is worth something and stop giving it away to get a cheap lawn cut. IMO

We can all do our little part . Don't support business' that hire illegals. It is as simple as that. Don't buy good or services from business' that is complicit in attracting illegals by promoting jobs or support services to them. Defend the meaning of American citizen. It was given to me by birth and the lives of many who died to keep this country free. I respect them enough to have that mean something. My advertising includes ....Restore what it means to be a citizen of the USA and hire an American worker to cut your lawn. It is beginning to make a difference with customers now aware of the true cost to our States from illegals as budgets are carved to the bone. Again it is nice to see a new crop of business owners in the green industry realize this was a costly path in the long run to hire illegals. short run profits traded for the long tern degradation of American citizenship.

I put my money behind my country. although not much is made in America any more I try and support what I can. I buy TORO equipment and I love Kohler motors. I would NOT support any of the sponsor of this site as it promotes illegals through their Spanish web site IMO. sorry that will probably kill this thread . Now if the chose to promote the legal immigration of Hispanic immigrants and advocate for enforcing our immigration laws I would shout their sponsors name from the roof tops.

That is bs Jeff. Speaking Spanish, French, German, Indian etc doesn't mean you are in this country illegally. Don't you know that most schools teach different languages?? Many choose to keep their language after becoming American citizens. I was cutting grass for a French family one time and they chose to talk to each other in French..Oh I thought, they must be illegals--NOT:hammerhead: There also are a lot of Spanish speaking American citizens mowing lawns. Don't try and read something into the new forum that isn't there.

Charles, while I have great respect for you mods and the great site, I have to agree with Jeff. The Spanish end of this site is big time anti American. Our grandparents, great grandparents, and so on had to learn the language and by promoting a bi lingual country only divides and hurts our great country. I have no problems with people speaking in their native tongue, but no government, company, or person should make it easy on them by providing them with the reason not to learn English, such as giving them a forum to post on.

Who know guys your employee might be in that forum degrading you!

Charles

Lawnsite is not in Spanish. So they need to learn English to access all of the info this site offers. I agree with all American citizens needing to learn English. BUT they can still fill free to speak their native language. Right? Free country?
People can speak many languages. The CIA recruits bilinguals. In a Global economy, speaking many different languages is highly desirable.

imo your marketing to the Hispanic workers in the green industry. Your exactly correct that I have no way to tell if there are illegals or not on that forum. However I'm posting that it is the green industry that is one of the major contributors to undermine our nations sovereignty by offering jobs to Hispanics or any other non-English speaking person with or with a SS number. In this period of high unemployment where English speaking Americans are looking for work I would hope an employer would choose that person over the Non-English speaking person with questionable credentials. we all know how easy it is to get a SS card and a drivers license especially in my home state of Maryland. Additionally, any business that seeks to profit from those illegal worker should be boycotted by American citizens that value the freedoms and respect our laws. I do appreciate your not deleting my postings so far as I think America needs to decide if citizenship is meaningless or has some value.

I went to visit my parents grave on Memorial day and I could hear the veterans screaming . Most of the crew cutting the lawns that week and setting up flags appeared to be Hispanic. You see I stopped by during the week to put some fertilizer on their graves and could hear them speaking Spanish. What happened to my country?
