When to Transplant Ferns?

I have some ferns in my backyard that I would like to transplant for next season. I was wondering- what is the best time to transplant ferns?

Based on articles on the net, they suggest fall or spring, but is there a preferred season/month to do this?

Fall when the temperatures start to cool, but the soil is still warm and hopefully we get some rain.
