Wow.. never seen anything like this before in my life. We just put the seed down for a new lawn about 4 days ago. Been watering ti every day.
Today I went outside and our entire yard, 36,000 sq feet is covered entirely with insects that resemble flying ants are knats of some sort. And I mean covered!
Not one square inch is untouched. So my questions are:
1) Why in the world are they here?

2) ARe they harmful to my new lawn?

Thanks for any and all help on this one. I am stumped.
Oh.. and we live in Western MA.

Got some pics? Regardless, I'm sure a blanket shot of carbaryl or bifenthrin would knock them out.

Depending on what area of the country you are, could be whitefly.

most flying ants and termites (SWARMERS)will come out around sunset and start flying off to establish new colonies .google termite swarmers ,flying ants and look at the differences of the wings .MY GUESS IS ,THEY ARE GONE , BY NOW .MIGRATION LASTS 1TO 3 NIGHTS , USUALLY ONE NIGHT .
