I have a CH730 with a bad exhaust valve seat. Any suggestions on where to buy a new head? The local dealer is a snake, so he's out.

Are they available built up, or do I need to buy valves, etc., and lap them in?

Thanks,
Frothy

Is the head ruined? Did the seat fall out and stick sideways?
I buy all my stuff from J.Thomas.

The seat came out about 1/16th of an inch at a very slight angle. Is there some way to repair the head that I don't know about?

Frothy, if you don't mind, can you please let me know what some of the symptoms of the motor were for you to verify it being a bad exhaust seat. Mine is burning oil and is rather low on power, low compression and what not. Are these simaler symptoms to what your motor was doing? Please let me know.

You should be able to refit the seat back into the head, gently tap with a wooden driver. Once it's allighned square pien the edges with a centre punch to seat it. Regrind the exhaust valve thoroughly and refit. When refitted turn it valve upper most and pour some gas into the head and check if it's leaking through. Persiveer with it, gonna save you a lot of money.
Good luck Phil :usflag:

Poor idle, followed shortly by sudden loss of power and backfiring thru carb. No oil issues.

Thank you for your reply, I thought mine might have bad rings but I was just making sure before I pulled the motor apart.

I did the same thing as stated above. Also had to buy a new push rod and head gasket. My kohler did it the first time late in 07, and then again in the spring of 08. Don't know why, the cooling fins were clean as well as the oil being full. Just a kohler thing I suppose. Not to mention 2000 + hrs.

you may want to check the valve guide, it may be sticking, also, once the seat gets hot enough to drop out of the head. that is what bent the pushrod, the valve pinched the seat between the head and piston on the up stroke. the main problem may have stemmed from a clogged up rotating screen. i have seen units repaired else where for big bucks and the screen left caked with clippings. boy do these guys get mad when you have to redo someone else's work.
