When building an outdoor bbq island on a pavingstone patio is it necessary to pour a separate concrete pad underneath the unit or can I just affix the steel studs of the island directly to pavers instead?

The island should be built on its own concrete pad particularly if it will have a one piece countertop. Granite countertops can crack easily if there is much settling or heaving of the island.

thanks. with our freeze/thaw I will be quoting with a pad underneath.
It will look better that way as well. In my opinion vertical units should sit below the patio level to look their best. It's like setting a decorative boulder on top of the mulch, it just doesn't look right if it's not burried in.
