I have a Scag Turf Tiger 22HP. When I run it on flat surfaces, it's fine, but when I'm running it on hills, the right side moves slower, you have to let up on the left side to keep it moving. And sometimes when I want to back up, when I pull the right stick back it won't move. But when I pull the left stick back, it will move slowly, but not near as fast as it should move. Anyone know what could be causing it? Is it possible it's a check valve in the pumps? It's always the right side and it gives me problems when going on hills. I can't back up with it, I have to swing the mower completely around to get where I need to go with it.
Thanks for the replies!

Had that happen on an '01 tiger and we lucked out---the freewheel valve was opened a little on one side. It may look like a nut on yours but is located right on the pump. Couldn't hurt to make sure they are on all the way.

How is the belt tension for the hydro?

Some things to consider, how many hours on machine, last time anybody was under it and cleaned, greased idler tensioner and checked the belt. If it is right side only, is the motion lever adjusted, do you feel a gravel-grinding in the right stick,(hope not), I have run into right-side failure on hydro pumps because the distance from the hydro-oil reservoir to the right side was too far, (on slopes), and the pump starved for oil, try jacking the rear up and see if both wheels are turning the same and while it's up in the air, change the filter and fluid, just some ideas,O.K.

Is there a valve on each side? Because I only found a nut on the left side.

Yeah, each pump has a bypass valve. Usually a 5/8 hex with a hole drilled thru the flats. It only needs to be snug. not caveman tight. This whole deal should be in your owners manual.

I was out mowing today and after 5 properties the mower wouldn't move. The right tire is spinning and my helper saw that the axle is slipping in the wheel. I barely got it on the trailer. I'm guessing this is the problem. Does anybody know what could be wrong or what I should look for when I get a chance to pull it apart?

If the axle is slipping in the wheel you might have a sheared key. Never seen this before but its possible.

I have, happens when they go up and down off of curbs. You will also need to inspect the hubs key way to make sure it did not get messed up.

I'll bimp this along....I am curious how difficult it will be to get that nut on the drive motor off? I am guessing the only way is with big impact wrench?

Getting the nut off is usually not the problem. The problem is getting the hub off, although if you have a sheared key it may come off easy.

Nah it will all come off easy. You will want to pray that you just broke a key, and not the shaft coming out of the wheel motor(it can be replaced) If the hub wont budge you can hit it off with a hammer fairly easy.
I broke a key and a HUGE chunk off the shaft, 650 bucks later for a complete wheel motor from J Thomas.
I broke it backing up full speed and I clobbered (in every sense of the word) a well casing.
Never did that again

***************BIG UPDATE*****************************
The other day on a job I was on a hill and the axle was spinning but not the wheel. So I pulled it all apart yesterday. The keyway slot is over a 50 cent piece wide. The key is all chewed up. And the shaft is rounded out also. Has anyone just replaced the shaft-I see you can buy it on J thomas along with the seal kit. Anybody know what's involved to go that route instead of replacing the wheel motor like ScagGrassGuy1978 did. I'm kinda strapped for cash. People aren't paying on time!!

It's not a real big deal to rebuild one, just make sure ya clean the housing/ hose connections before ya start tearin into it. Cleanliness is the key. Parker has info on rebuilding. Your'e probably going to need a wheel hub also. Whichever way ya go, make sure the hub and shaft tapers are clean and oil/grease free before ya put em together.

Dude I paid 650 I think for the hub and the pump, and overnight shipping too, You can buy the pump and the parts needed to fix the shaft, and bam you got a spare wheel motor.
I didnt have the time to rebuild, so I bought the whole thing, Time is money.
The wheel motor takes like 10 minutes to replace.
I tried welding the hub to the shaft to buy some time but it Didnt work. Maybe if the welder was stronger it would of worked.
Check with some scag dealers, they might have old pumps they can steal some parts off to fix yours....check your options.
I have been in your shoes before, equipment down....not much money.....ughhh I do not miss those days
