View Full Version : Symptoms of a bad Hydro pump?

Hey guys,
I think one of my pumps on my gravely 260z went out today.
The right side does not respond at all and hydro fluid was coming out of the reservoir where the fluid goes in.
Does this sound like a bad pump?
Where can I get a pump to install myself and what would it cost?

Thanks

This is a tricky situation, because if it blew a seal or something (which will plug up the flow), it is very possible and unfortunately very likely that the MOTOR is contaminated, too. Pull the motor with the pump, and go through the motor completely. This will save you from having to buy a new wheel motor, as well (which doubles the cost). This happens a vast majority of times. The pumps are available through JThomas.

Is JThomas on this site or a company I can order through?

Ok so the mower has just been sitting in the garage for the last week.
I went to take a look at it and there is hydro fluid all over the ground.
I check the hoses and cannot find a leak.
Are there seals in the pump that can go out. The only place a can see oil is directly under the pump on the pulley.
Any thoughts?

Yes, the primary out-put shaft seal has failed, usually associated with either a ton of hours, not sufficiently warming up the machine prior to use or an abusive operator.
That said the actual seal replacement on this type of pump is ridiculously easy.
Just get the numbers for your machine, serial number and model number plus the number off of the pump.
Then purchase a complete seal kit not just the out-put shaft seal as simply replacing this seal will not correct the problem that lead to the seal failing in the first place.
Grab a couple of cold beers, have a clean surface on your work bench then disassemble the pump laying out the parts as they come out of the pump housing.
Replace ALL of the O rings paying particular attention to the gear rotor cleanliness then re-install the pump on the mower chassis, fill the hydraulic tank with approved fluid, start the motor with both wheels off of the ground and the hydraulic system should purge itself pretty quickly.
Start to finish with parts in hand this job shouldn't take over an hour - particularly on a larger ztr mower with easy pump accessibility using air tools.
Since I haven't torn a pump down by hand I have no idea how long it will take.
