I worked at a farm today with a friend who is contracting the restoration of the barn and a bunch of other stuff that needs to be done. The owner lives 3hrs from his farm and my friend (has known the owner for close to 20 years) lives at the farm next to his. He had a 50x100 Morton building up. I think I counted 6 farm tractors, 2 pickups, enough lumber to repair/restore barn, a skid steer, a huge area with wood working equipment just sitting around plus even more space for a big work bench and other stuff. The floor is gravel right now and he wants to concrete the entire building! Where we fall into plan is doing all the work. He has lime disease and can't do any of the work. His dad left him the farm 10 years ago and he hasn't used any of it other then mowing. His wife inherited a large sum of money so he wants to get the farm back up to looking good. The house needs painted and repairs inside and out, new kitchen and bathroom. Lots of work needs to be done and my friend said it might put us half way through the winter with work. The owner isn't in a hurry to finish the house since he lives elsewhere. I hope he can keep the work rolling for awhile.....

it's actually going to have a 24X40 enclosed shop in the middle and a 12X40 shed down each side for equipment

Sounds like something I can use. I just can't find a few things I need to build it.
Can't find the time, place or the money but I sure am jealous of yours. Make sure you put the pix up for us.

Be sure to add a loft or something like that of which you can use as your office
ffemt1271
09-07-2008, 11:16 PM
it's not gonna be tall enough for a loft, but were gonna put a mini office in it.built it low because we get some severe winds from the hurricanes and it's tucked behind some other buildings on top of a hill
and didn't want it taller than them

Did you hire a contractor or oversee everything yourself?

the building looks nice. it'l seem huge at first and then fill up fast !
I will be doing all the work on my shop next march. quonset arch type with 8 foot straight sides, 60w x 100L x 25 tall peak , 35k delivered with open ends. already have my pad, I'll have to put in new footers on the 2 100ft edges, so another 5k probably in foundation work and 3-5k to close in the ends with stick framing .
I may do a play by play like yours on lawnsite !
I hope your building goes great !

i oversaw it myself, these guys were good, all they do is put up these kit buildings, 1 day for dirt work, 1 day for concrete, and 2 to put up the building.
took them longer on mine but they were trying to dodge high winds and rain from the hurricane.

yep, it beats the 10 x 12 portable building i've been using, now i won't have to unhitch the trailer every night. truck and trailer will fit under one side hitched up. i got the work benches in today, and almost all of the electrical done. hope to be completely thru tomorrow, then it's time to move all of my stuff there.

I'm wondering why you didn't have them enclose the whole building? Surely it wouldn't have costed very much extra for some extra metal siding installed.
Seems like a no brainer to me? I guess you could always add that on later if you wanted. What would be nice is if you had garage doors on both ends so you could drive straight through the building without backing up ever.

we thought about it, it would have taken almost twice the wall metal and four more doors, an 5000 in concrete, truck and trailer going under one side, farm equipment storage on the other. we could store more equipment being able to back it in any direction. i did get the electrical, work bench, and some of the storage done, will try to get some pics tomor:usflag:row
