I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana now and looking to move somewhere north of ATL, I was thinking around lawrenceville, maybe Dacula, but dont have anything set in stone. How is the economy in GA, Crime, People? Any places to stay away from? I will be selling my business here, one way or another, and am actively seeking work down and around ATL,(anything that would pay $30k/yr) I also have a newborn and wife and am 26. Any info on north atlanta area would be appreciated! Oh I am also looking to spend around 300k on a home. Thanks

hey colepyck. i have lived in the northwest side of ga for 28 years. from pulding to cobb and cheroke. i live in kennesaw witch is about thirty minutes north of atl. the crime here is good. lawrencvill area is nice and from what ive heard pretty safe. normallly the people are nice and hospitable. the realestate market is down here so u should be able to find lots of nice houses in ur price range

thanks blake, how is the unemployment down there I would be relocating without a job probably, I would even take something for 10-12 an hour just until I can get placed for something more in my field, are those jobs readily available, like UPS grunt work? Thanks again

I would not choose Lawrenceville. The traffic will suck if you need to work in Atlanta . I-85 is no fun during rush hour. Good suburban areas would be Kennesaw,Cumming, Canton ( North side). Check out Loganville as well. It is still close to Atlanta and fairly close to Athens .If you want to live close to Atlanta, then Decatur, Avondale Estates and Tucker can be some good areas to look at. They have some crime, but it's not a scary place to live.

How about Dacula or Buford?

dont know much about those areas. the unemployment market is not that bad from what ive seen and heard. u should be able to find a job pretty easily. theres a fedex wharehouse up here in kennesaw that is allways hiring.

Dacula, Buford, Laweranceville, Sugar Hill, and all those places near there are as good as any. The caution note is try not to travel on I-85 anytime during rush hour. But, that is generally true of any highway around Atlanta.

I have accounts along that corridor and I time my stops to go the opposite direction as traffic or during non-peak times.

Economy ok to good, home prices GREAT at the moment. TONS of businesses around for finding jobs.

My GF family is from Huntington/FtWayne area and I know how you feel. Not nearly close enough to the beach but I take enough vacations to get my wigglies sandy. At least you won't freeze to death here.

(And a great guy to gals ratio here! Yeah momma!)

Thanks wizard that make me a little more comfortable during this transition. Cant wait to be a little closer to everything, not much to do here anytime of the year. I chose GA because the cost of living was close to Indiana but it just seems that there are many more pros and than cons

Cole... I am curius as to why your are looking for a home in the 300s at 26. I have a 200k home and am 25. Also a wife and new born. We are actually considering selling the house and getting debt free then save up a good down payment, like 20-30k and then buying a house again. Maybe a foreclosure...

Now... back to the point at hand... I live in Woodstock, have my whole life... if I had the choice to move again, I would live in Canton. GREAT community, VERY family oriented, very nice, they have redesigned it? with great new shopping centers and all. About 30 min to Atlanta, 40min to the mountains, 5 minutes, or literally down the street from the lake, GREAT mtn biking, beach is about 5-9 hours depending on where you go... GREAT town and growing fast.

DeepGreen... Its what I am accustomed to. I also have some great equity in my house here I plan on putting down on a home there. I also know that I can get a lot of house down there for that money being the market being so soft. My only complaint is in that price range there are hardly NO 3 car garages, its insane, here for 200 you get 3000 finished sq ft and nice oversized 3 car, there they are all 2! Thanks for your input I am eager to sell my home and get the ball rolling! The reasons you have listed are general as to why I want to move down there to begin with.

Bring some gas

Yea my Dad said something about that, how the hell is that possible? You guys consistantly have had cheaper gas than we have by about 20 cents, how could one state run out of gas

it's really none of my business, colepyk, but how the heck do you plan on having a 300K house (and the lifestyle that accomodates that kinda home)-not that 300k is just HUGE, but is a pretty moderate house on 30K salary-?? And a newborn?? Again, no mean to offend, and is really none of my business, but thought I'd ask. Good luck, and ATL area is nice--good $$$ potential in ATL-companies there charge out the a$$!

Bring some gas

No Kidding! I filled up today with diesel... it seemed more gas stations had gas today but the lines were just as long if not longer... made my route take a lot longer too due to people blocking the roads... I wish I had a camera to take a picture of all of this...
