lawn renovation - preemergent

I am about to dethatch aerator and overseed a lawn.

If I do this in the fall do I hold ,off on putting preemirgent down in the spring. How do I avoid crabgrass and dandelions if I don;t put a preemergent down in the spring?

I reseeded a lawn last year and didn't put any preemiegent down in the spring and now I am dealing with a lawn full of crabgrass.

We wait until the tail end of our 1st round to apply pre emergents to lawns seeded the previous Fall. This gives the lawns a chance to continue with their establishment before any weed services are rendered. We also have toyed with the idea of putting down a starter fert for 1st round then hitting with a single heavy app of pre emergent for the 2nd. Because of the price of starter fert we pretty much nixed that idea.
