Pond Shoreline

I have a fairly large pond on our farm which requires more trimming than I care to do!!! The grass grows right to the water's edge, and some of the weeds are growing right in the water. What options are there regarding the shoreline? We're been thinking about putting stone and rocks around it (with weed barrier fabric underneath), but I'm not convinced that will eliminate the trimming. I figure all that will do is move it away from the water.
Any Ideas are appreciated.
