Why do you guys act so SURPRISED when you see advertisement strategie like this? Do you really think he does any lawns at $12? DOUBT IT! Read carefully...It says STARTING AT.....
We have this conversation about once a month,..and it always comes down to the same thing...These are marketing KEY WORDS. They are the exact same as phrases like "as low as", "starting at", and "for just...". It is all a sales gimmick. It could be to get a $12 mowing, you have to buy 5 at regular cost. Or, something like this is the "mowing" price "up to 1000 sq. ft.. It could also be if it is included as part of a "full service" agreement - which COULD include weekly bed care, ornamental care, lawn care, shrubbery. there are a hundred different possibilities of marketing strategies this could be.
Look at any ad for services such as carpet (2.99 a yard, and free labor - what they DON'T tell you, is that you have to get the equivalent of 3 rooms done for the labor to be "free"), cleaning services, (4 rooms done for just $100 - what they put in SMALL print though, is that "up to" 200 sq. ft. is classified as "a room". Anything after that, is referred to as two rooms). There are many, many other examples like this.

But he does also does claim, "Remember I have the lowest price guarantee no one will ever beat my prices! " So not only is a low-baller but he low balls low ballers. So he is at the very bottom of the bottom feeders....

Seriously, are we going to post a link to every craigslist ad that advertises cheap lawn services? The first 20 times it gave us a chuckle, but come on!

You would have to come down and sit at an intersection and watch some of these people. They probably wouldnt know what marketing strategy or key word even means. I was behind one guy yesterday with no lights at all on an enclosed trailer, so you couldnt even see anything on the truck. Then another, no lights again, trailer literally falling apart. Back tire on the trailer on one side was missing. The hub was just about hitting the pavement as he turned. I passed them and it was two rednecks with about $10,000 worth of tattoos. I was at the mower shop one day about 11 am, and there are two guys in a truck finishing their beer before going in to get what they needed. It goes on and on, but these guys really arent the "competition", anyone with a brain would be after a higher class of customer than these guys. I just did an estimate. When I was there she said the other guy just stopped coming. Wish I had known that before I wasted my time. I bid it at $135. Oh, she says, I was paying $60.
