If you don't have many other accounts, I say throw some ambers on your truck, bid so it is worth your time to be out there, get a friend and go for it, Just my opinion though.

renting mowers here is 100% tax deductible.
there is acompany here with one that is a 7 digit job and he only has one big trailer

I-285 is at least 40 miles long. He'll need more than one little Exmark to handle that.

most likey you will need a bid bond and a perforance bond and if you just started out well......dont think you could pull this one out....but do go to the meeting so you can learn something so next time you can be ready...good luck

Sound like it will pay well, but I wouldnt do it. Too many people out there dirving way to fast, that would scare me. My wife wont even let me consider things like that or bad area housing projects anymore.

Dangerous work. I'm a FF and have seen interstate accidents involving pedestrians or highway workers. People driving on interstates don't care about anyone else except themselves or where they have to go.

Just be-careful if you take it. Get a full sized amber LED lightbar for your truck, wear your orange vest, orange helmet, and put lights on your mower.

They're required to take a certain number of competitive bids. It kind of smells like someone's already got this one nailed down.

Intended for customers with large areas to mow and hills to climb, the 1600 Turbo Series II Wide-Area Mower features a 57-hp, turbocharged, overhead-valve, 4-cylinder, liquid-cooled Yanmar diesel engine with on-demand or full-time mechanical rear wheel drive. Mow up to 68 acres in an 8-hour day with a nearly 11-foot cutting width.

Let me clarify.... :cool2: This is about as big as it gets! Think I'd need ALL the above suggestions, PLUS!

This is a 128 miles of 10 lane Interstate plus all the connectors (cloverleafs) that circle the entire city of Atlanta GA. A couple of guys and a new mower anit gonna do it! :dizzy::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Bid requires you to have an engineer on staff and minimum 15% of workforce already hired.... yada yada.

Better yet, have a good read if ya want. Here's the proposal:

This is the same thing they are doing down here in Fla.with the Turnpike and I-95..what you have to be is a little GA state office..meaning you are will have to be the main contractor and then bid everything out..from landscaping--paving--light poles--snow removal--mowing--cleaning restroom and what ever that state road area may need.Better get the check book out...

U need a Wide Area Mower - Like the Deere 1600 or Toro 580D or Ransomes 951D..11 ft to 16 feet...invest - you will get paid...go for it. I sucked it up and invested and I got paid...

He would be better off buying either an exmark xs 72" with the speed-up kit or a dixie chopper 74". The dixie will cut up to 73.6 acres per hour. The Deere only mows at 8.6mph.

Do you realize that this is asking for highway maintenance? Including highway snow and ice clearing? (momma do they get snow and ice in Georgia?) That's why the require an civil engineer. This sounds more like asphalt trucks and rollers than mowers, although mowing could be part of it. This isn't the bid yet, this is just the first step to see if you want/can do the job

I'm suprised the state DOT doesnt take care of that. At least thats what its like here in KS. KDOT(Kansas DOT) has big ford and john deere tractors that mow all the states highways. Your almost gonna need a tractor and a wing fold mower.

You don't use a WAM for highway mowing. Highway mowing is HARD on equipment and doesn't call for an ultra manicured look. You get a 80+ hp tractor and a batwing mower. pick up some four wheelers or Gators for guys running string trimmers. Didn't read the contract so I won't comment on aspects other than mowing. Around here the guys use 4 man crews. 2 on four wheelers picking up trash and trimming and 2 on tractors mowing one behind the other getting the roadside done in one pass. Pretty amazing how much two tractors can mow in a day.

just to let you know 4wheeler is not a legal machine to pickup trash. Its call a atv and under state law is not allow but gator and mules types which are call utv are legal to be use on roads to pick trash up.

Read through the contract, and I think you're wasting your time pursuing this.

Most of these full service deals include paving, shoulder work, drainage work, plowing, salting/sanding, mowing, service of restroom facilities, maintenance/replacement of signage, etc.

Unless you've got a broad knowledge of the above, I'd say your time is better spent elsewhere.

I'd be willing to bet the the winner bidder will not be a landscape contractor but one who does highway construction. He will then sub out the mowing and jobs that he doesn't want.

. . . and that's what the 15% retention is all about. They expect that the various trades will end up in different sub-trades hands, sorta like house building (plumbers, electricians etc) Your game would be to find the primary contractor and sign on as the mowing contractor under him. and as somebody mentioned theis would be a job for tractors not Z's

Well the roads here (in GA) really need to be mowed. They did it late fall and now its starting to get really tall again. GDOT sucks. Theres a little property around an intersection (about an acre) that we mow for free - its right by our place. Surprisingly, the home depot headquarters doesn't do it. You'd think they would...

You'd better keep mowing it if you want to see it cut. Georgia is no better off than any other state. They simply don't have the money to manicure every mile of highway.

Georgia faces a structural deficit. The recently approved FY 2010 budget closed a $3.3 billion budget deficit, which resulted from revenue shortfalls, by using $1.35 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funds, almost $500 million in various reserve funds, and cutting approximately $1.5 billion from state agencies. Even with projected revenue growth of approximately 5 percent in FY 2011 and 6 percent in FY 2012 as projected in the governor’s FY 2010 budget report, Georgia will face an FY 2011 budget deficit of $823 million and an FY 2012 budget deficit of $1.94 billion.

Yep.

Its kinda cool (but bad at the same time) to look at where we 'become lazy' and stop mowing. By the end of summer, the grass/weeds will be 4 inches one place and 4 feet right beside it. Also the differences in edging makes our zone pop. My bro and I spent about 2 days cutting the edge back - the grass had grown about 8 inches over the sidewalk on each side.
