Just having problems with my Wheelhorse. A kid was using it and picked up some elctric fence wirce on one of the blades. He carried on trying to cut and eventually burned out the cutter deck belt. He replaced it but now when engaging the cutter - manual cutter - the blades rotate very slowly and do not cut.

I suspected it was the clutch but apparently there is no clutch plate there to replace.

WHen I engage the cutter the clutch moves into position but only turns very slowly. The belt is brand new and dosn't appear to be slipping.

Previously whn I engaged the cutter the noise it made was quite loud and noticeable. Now its silent! Any ideas guys???

The FULL model and serial number off this unit would be helpful; http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=144040, Did you inspect the deck spindles with the belt off to make sure they spin freely ?

Thanks for the reply Restrorob.

I think the model is E227-K5. Its a 5 speed manual model, Manual Cutter engagement on a 42 inch deck.

Yes I dropped the deck and that is fine. I removed about 3 metres of electric fence from the one spindle which was why the belt burned out

I checked the scematic drawings on-line and maybe the problem is the bearing in the clutch assembly has disintegrated? Unusually though there is absolutely no noise from the cutter deck when engaged - so I never thought about the bearing. If that has gone then the shaft wont transfer any drive to the cutters I guess.

Can you let me know if this makes any sense please.

Thanks again for your time and input.

Well,

I'm having trouble finding a parts break-down with the numbers you posted, There must be another number maybe a serial number ?

I did find the below manual clutch for a 1990 227-5, Doe's yours look like this one ?

If not can you post a link to the schematic you found ?

If yours does look like this one and if the bearing went bad it would cause the deck to want to run all the time and not dis-engage.

There must be some type of friction (clutch) lining bonded to either REF#11 on the tapered area or inside REF#5 on the tapered area, It's been too many years since I worked on one of these to remember which has the lining.

But, Regardless of the style manual clutch it must have some type of lining on one side. It most likely got burned off trying to operate with the wire wrapped around the spindle.
